| Post subject: Travel from Shanghai to... |
I'm in Shanghai for seven more weeks with a group people (student exchange program, we're all under 25). Some of us (between four and 10) want to go to a few places but need some leads for economical travel.
1: Beijing (6 days, leaving late Thurs 29 June or early Fri 30 June and returning late Wed 5 July or early Thurs 6 July)
Is a night train to/from Beijing our best bet? Considering we have plenty to read and can always use more sleep, an overnight train is probably a good idea. We plan to stay in a hostel. How easy is it to get to the tourist-areas in/around Beijing (Tianemen Square, Great Wall, Forbidden Palace). Where else should we go?
2: International (3-4 days, leaving late Thursday, returning early Monday)
Some of us have dual-entry Visas, and plan to use them! We were thinking Hong Kong, but there's no reason why Macau or Seoul is out the question. Obviously we want the cheapest travel possible, but also want to maximize our time at the location.
What is the best way to get to Hong Kong? Overnight trains again are perfectly fine. What is there to do in Hong Kong besides buy cheap stuff?
3: Around Shanghai (1-2 day weekend trip, afternoon trip, all-day trip)
What's worth doing, and how much does it cost? We've seen People's Square, Nanjing Lu, the Bund, a couple museums, the fake market.
Any ideas, suggestions, comments, etc. would be great. Thanks!

the train to HK takes about 24 hours from shanghai... which means that you would only have friday night and saturday there if you go that route (if you are to be back in shanghai early monday). another option to consider is to take a flight to shenzhen and then take either a ferry, bus or train into hk. think that runs roughly less than usd200 for the return. however, there are some direct flights to be found, often with hotel options that can cost about usd300-350. perhaps call some travel agents to see what specials are being offered.
lots to hk... beaches, shopping, clubs, victoria's peak, riding the world's longest escalator... macau is also very close, a quick boat ride away.
shanghai... kind of depends what your interests are. you can go check out the arts district on/around mogoshan road, walk through the former french concession, take a river tour along the huangpu river, head out for a day trip to chongming island or hangzhou, if you like gardens, go to suzhou or wuxi, visit one of the nearby watertowns, go to the fabric market and have things made, go diving with sharks at the aquarium, check out the jade buddha temple, |

Thanks! Anyone else have any suggestions? I think we're taking a day trip to Suzhou this weekend, and possibly to Hangzhou. Has anyone taken the overnight boat on the Grand Canal from Suzhou to Hangzhou? We are considering doing that and making the entire thing an overnight trip, instead of two back-to-back day trips.
Comments? Suggestions?
