Are the JW Marriott martinis any good? What do they charge? The ones at Senses are surprisingly good, and at RMB50 are reasonably priced. |

No, they're not any good. I asked for a dry gin martini with a lemon twist. First the waitress patiently tried to explain to me that I really wanted a 'lemontini'. Then after much persuasion and explanation, I finally got a gin martini with two lemon slices floating on top and no twist. The glassware is also dreadful. It doesn't just look bad but is actually hard to use given their relatively low benches (low stemless 'martini' glass + low bench = we put no thought into any of this, we're just trying to be zany and different)
I think they cost RMB 65 or so. Then there is some kind of a happy hour free-flow deal which I haven't tried but could be a way of getting drunk in nice surroundings - the view is one of the best around. |

What's the name of the bar at the JW Marriott? I still might try the martini happy hour. If the lazy bartenders won't twist the lemon, then I will. |

I can't remember the name. . . I think it is called the JW 'jiu long' ('wine corridor') in Chinese. There is a sort of a bar/cafe at the lobby level. That isn't the one. You have to change to another set of lifts to get to the right one, and then it is kind of on your left as you come out of the lists on the right level. |

Interesting to see that Constellation hasn't scored a vote yet. If there had been a whiskey bar category, they would have done better.
Kiwi, thanks for the JW info. |

Constellation haven't scored a vote because the voters are half-wits.
Constellation are far more than a whiskey bar. They make easily the best cocktails in town. For a start they are the only place I know of with good cold ice. They don't offer anything too fancy, but they at least get the basics right.
But it is a stupid poll anyway. Face is on the list?!? Nothing against Face. The decor is cool. But the drinks are seriously awful. JW Marriot tread that dubious line between clueless and classy. Their view saves them, despite their staff moving relentlessly from pratfall to pratfall. Senses punch well above their weight given that they are really a wine bar, but at the end of the cocktails aren't really their thing (no decent mixing bourbon for a start). I haven't been to Pier One or Studio 78. However, given that Pier One tout their sound system (apparently "it's really loud but doesn't hurt your ears") as their main attraction I'd be surprised if they had great drinks. Maybe Studio 78 is the dark horse in all this. Perhaps I should check them out? |

i prefer my wine over the mundane cocktails here in sh. not impressed with any of the listed places.
was at cotton's and saw the bartender use his teeth to get the spigot (where the alcohol comes out!!!) off a bottle. disgusting.
I like the way KIWI used 'dark horse' to describe studio 78's as if this were a presidential race. cool. |

Studio 78 is fine for a beer or a house wine, but I've never had a cocktail there, not even a G&T. Was interested in Kiwi's comments about Constellations cocktails; next time there I'll try a cocktail, instead of a whiskey. Will be trying Pier One next week. |

I am a HUGE Brandy Alexander fan - after a few I'm flying. Always hit them hard at FACE, so will have to give them a trot at Senses next time if Mat has them on his drinks list. |

Constellation hands down. They are in a different league than the rest, when it comes to cocktails. |

Perception is everything. As with the other polls, most of what is on these polls is result of a nomination by other members of the site. It maybe that one place seriously has the best, but if another place has the perception of best for whatever reason.. they win. |
