| Post subject: Exporting A Cat |
I am mid-way through the process right now and wanted to share what I have learned. Should you be planning on exporting a cat (the rules may be the same for dogs), then the following is the procedure:
(Note that I am exporting to the United States, the requirements for other countries may be different; ie, length of time between shots... it is best to call for your specific requirements.)
The animal needs to be brought to the clinic at 361 Zhao Jia Bang Road, in between Xiang Yang Road and Da Ma Lu Qiao Road. Operating hours are 9:00am to 9:00pm, Monday through Sunday. Enter the building and then head left and exit the building, the clinic you need will be straight ahead. There is a security guard who can direct you.
The animal will have his/her temperature taken and given the rabies shot and an international microchip. If you are not up to date on vaccinations, then those can also be given. You will complete a small, blue booklet with the animals name, breed, coloring, date of birth, your name, address, and telephone number. This booklet will have the microchip number and the vacination stamps inside.
Cost to this point is RMB450 for felines.
Thirty days after receiving the rabies vaccination, the animal is ready to travel. Seven days prior to travel, the animal must be brought to the same clinic for the health screen. At this time, two copies of your passport, two copies of the blue booklet and two copies of your tickets/e-tickets must be brought. A health screen will be given, including blood work.
Cost for this was quoted at RMB430.
Two days prior to departure, return to the clinic and pick up the export paperwork that has been prepared. It is not necessary to bring your pet with you at this point.
The doctor who saw my cat spoke fantastic english and was able to answer all my questions. The entire process took less than 20 minutes and they gave me all the information I need to know about how to export the beastie.
The telephone number of the clinic is 6418-9236. English speaking receptionist. They also had the cat harness that I wanted for travel which I was unsure could be found here! Plus a good selection of imported foods and other pet items. |

Update:
Took the cat in for her mandatory bloodwork within 7 days of travel and returned two days before travel to pick up the export paperwork. Not a problem.
Upon arrival at Pudong Airport, someone asked to see the paperwork, they glanced at it, but not at the cat, and waved us through.
Upon arrival in the US, we had to go to special window for health services where a friendly woman looked in the carrier and said "aren't you are pretty cat! Welcome to America!'. Never even asked where she was from or to see the paperwork. Shocking.
Entire process was painless, easy and worth it. |

Mag was your cat chipped already?
I'm thinking of when I leave China...my cat was chipped in the States, but maybe not an international chip. Will he need to be re-chipped, do you think? |

The Beastie was chipped in China during the original vist to the export facility; however, most chips are international as there are not an overwhelming number of animal chip companies and scanners. Beastie got her chip and I was told that it would work with US-used chip scanners. You can probably take your cat to the clinic and see if the scanner will read it.
While I wouldn't risk it, I will tell you that her microchip wasn't scanned upon depature (China to US) or arrival (US). |

I just wasn't sure if my cat would eventually need to be chipped again. And no, Magnolia, not thinking of leaving China yet despite my PM to you! Just eventually....
But when my cat was missing for a day, I checked with my chip company, and I couldn't put my international address as my contact information. I needed to put in a state and a 5 digit zip code. So I put in my Vonage phone number, as well as my neighbor's info back in the US, and of course they know how to get in touch with me.
I just thought that was weird. I had to get the cat chipped to come to China, and then the company's not set up for international addresses. |

3pm
Just arrived home from the pet health clinic.
First, I must say that you, Magnolia, never cease to amaze me not only with your knowledge of where to do what/where/how, but also that you take the time to share the knowledge here on ShExpat. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Armed with a print-out of Magnolia's notes (from this thread) on this procedure and my dear kitty in his carrier, we made our way to the clinic and it was as easy and painless (to a good degree also for Skippy, our feline).
I would like to share info about the cost with our experience today. Our payment today was RMB 590. After being chipped, they prepared and explained how to administer a gel medicine (after Skippy's dinner for the next 2 weeks) whose purpose is to relieve the likely discomfort as a result of the chip installation. The cost of that gel was RMB 120.
Here's info I copied from the label on the gel if you want to know more of what your animal might be ingesting, should s/he use it. The gel is called Bene-Bac and the label said it was made and printed in the US (state of Illinois) by PetAg. It says it is a source of live naturally occuring organisms for dogs, cats, and other small mammals. It contains lactic acid producing bacteria.
So the breakdown of the cost from today's visit is:
300 chip
170 vaccination
120 gel
Following Magnolia's wonderful tips, we'll go again in 30 days which should time also within 7 days of our leaving the country and we'll bring Skippy for his health screening along with 2 copies of the passport, health booklet, and plane tix.
following the pet health gospel according to Magnolia, we'll return 2 days prior (Mao can stay at home) to pick up the export paperwork.
Thank you, again, Magnolia, for this and other great advice over the last 2+ years we've been here! |

thank you for the kind words, suamei. it seems the prices have increased a bit and that gel wasn't offered when the beastie was chipped... i wish it had been as i do recall her feeling out of sorts for a few days after the initial visit.
does skippy need a sedative to travel? beastie did not need one, but she did insist on being on my lap for the entire flight... i took the sedatitive instead.
one other random note... at the airport, the security people made a fuss about some piece of paper (note, not immigration, not customs, not the pet patrol people)... i didn't have it and gave them everything i had. after about a ten minute delay they finally let me through. after boarding, i actually looked in that ticket envelope and saw that the airline had supplied a handwritten slip stating i was traveling with a cat. they must have put it in the envelope and i didn't know. no biggie... but just in case you are in security and they ask for paperwork, that is what they want!
safe travels to you and skippy! |

I have to ask a question. I will be going to shanghai soon. I have two cats in Denmark which, if my shanghai stay will be longterm, i will try and bring to shanghai. However, i worry about the long travel. How do you travel with your cats? are they in the cabin with you in their travelbox? it is a long flight, what about when they have to ... go to the "toilet"?? And if you have brought your cat from your own country and i have indoor cats is it easy to get them out again? My worst fear is that i end up bringing them to shanghai and then are unable to get them out again. I love my cats |
