| Post subject: Changing RMB into UK Pounds and Canadian Dollars |
Presently running around trying to get all our paperwork together to change our RMB into UK Pounds and Canadian dollars. It's not a huge amount, but we are hitting brickwalls with our employer getting everything done before we go on leave next week. Could anybody suggest where we might go to get the money changed on an informal basis???

Go to a money changer... they are all over town; especially in front of larger banks (you can ask the security man). If you don't know the person, the accompany them into the bank while they withdraw the money from an account and give to you directly to prevent fake notes. |

If you just need FX for holiday purpose (--> not large amount) may be you could just exchange it in the bank.
Saw in newspaper now the rule for exchanging foreign currency for holiday purpose is relieved. The other day went to BOC and inquired for this and the lady confirmed that it is simple just to exchange for some foreign currency cash (less than equiv. of US2000) over the counter. Just take your ID document ( and of course I think your bank book otherwise I think the bank won't serve you). I didn't changed yet because I only need them later. I asked about it in BOC WaiHaiLu branch near HK Plaza. |

Can someone confirm the above?? Can we just change RMB to USD over the counter now? I am walking over to the bank soon! |

Not sure of this new rule but I would discourage anyone from changing their money with the "money changers" running around. Just when you think you could get real notes by watching them withdrawing the notes from the bank counter, you always get cheated like you see in the magic shows. You just don't see when they exchange fake notes with the real ones, or when they give you less. I got cheated in Bali when I thought I was watching without blinking. It wasn't a huge amount luckily.
If you just want enough cash for a holiday, change with your friends or colleagues. |

Not true...went to BOC and was told of the normal way.. i.e showing employment and tax documents.
The exchnaging over the counter is for locals only. |
