| Post subject: Superman Returns? |
This is going to be either the absolute best movie of this year, or it's going to bomb heavily at the box office. One star of the movie is on Jay Leno, while the other's on Letterman. One person is on the Today show, while the other's on Regis & the chick who took over for Kathy Lee. Cable shows got "The Physics of Superman" saying...
| Superman One wrote: |
| "If Superman caught Lois at that speed, she'd have died instantly!" |
| Too much time on some nerd's hands... wrote: |
| If Krypton had blown up shortly after his leaving the planet, the radiation alone would've killed him, especially under a 'Red Giant' star." |
It better be worth it, only because it's the first movie I'm gonna see in the theaters here in the US since SW:TPM. Decypher that geeks! |

Hey,
From what Ive seen it looks promising, hope it breaks at least even at the box office, as Hollywood is in need of a lift right now. |

^They get what they deserve. So much utter crap out right now. I heard that they fcuked up some no-brainers like MI 3 and X-men 3. I was dragged out to some snoozer last week and slept thought 80% of it. I'm looking forward to the new Strangers With Candy movie opening tomorrow night...I think. |

^ Lucar I can understand with MI3, but heard some good reports on Xmen 3 , but I guess you would have to be a die hard fan of the series. |

I dunno. Peeps told me that X-men 3 was done by some other producer or director or something and that it didn't have any of the umph of the other two. I think I'll wait until it comes out on video. No reason to spend 12 USD on seeing a piece of crap in the theater. |

Superman Returns is directed by none other than Bryan Singer, who basically saved the comic hero movie franchise single-handedly after turkeys like the Batman series (post Tim Burton, pre-Batman Begins), Daredevil, and the Godawful Elektra (didn't Jennifer Garner use to be hot?) almost shut the door on good comic book adaptations altogether. Notice I did not include the new Spiderman movies in that list, as they do not completely suck hairy wet dog balls. In any case, Singer was the director for the first two X-Men movies, as well as Apt Pupil and The Usual Suspects. He really knows how to tell a cohesive story with action, suspense, and a very human side that makes the audience give a crap about the characters on screen. The same cannot be said for Brett Ratner. His greatest claim to fame was Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker's Rush Hour...which to me seemed like a really dumbed down and annoying odd couple version of Richard Donner's excellent first two Lethal Weapon movies. I've seen X-Men 3, and I can say that it struggles to keep the viewer interested. There are too many new characters being introduced and too little development, so that in the end, only those who have read the comics and watched the first two X-Men films would care about the deaths of some major characters. With Brian Singer at the helm of Superman Returns, I have no doubt that it will bring the Superman franchise back to the level of quality and humanity of the original two Superman films. I think Christopher Reeves will be smiling on this new film from somewhere in his eternal Fortress of Solitude. |

Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman. Nothing will or can change that. He is the figure we have in our minds of this super good guy that flies around saving people. He was also a Superman in real life as he kept his positive attitude in his horrific quadriplegic condition and pushed for new research.
It is interesting how this new movie will still use Marlon Brando's voice. |

Apparently, there were performances recorded of Brando that never made it into the first movie. I'm not clear on whether it was only voice over work or actual visual footage as well. In any case, they blew the dust off of the stuff left on the editing room floor and figured out a way to incorporate it into the new film. With what they can do with CG special effects these days, I imagine they could practically recreate Brando digitally for some of the scenes if you had to see him. It's an ambitious move, no question about that. It remains to be seen whether using Brando's voice will add something of value to the experience. I'm betting it makes a pretty big impact. |

Remember that movie The Island of Dr Moreau?
Brando was in that and his English accent was fantastic. |

Christopher Reeve will be the best KNOWN Superman, only because of the press given to him both before & after his horse-riding accident. That does NOT take away from his performance in Superman IV. Have you ever seen that movie, AJJ? One of the worst movies starring Christopher Reeve, ever made.
Neutron Man! Yay! |

With or without Christopher Reeve, it's one of the worst movies ever. |

Yeah when he stops nuclear war. Not a bad movie.
But he is still Superman to me. Whether the movie sucked or not he is Superman and seeing what he did in real life shows that that title fits him off the screen as well. Sean Connery is the only James Bond to me also.
Too bad Richard Pryor can't be in this one. |

Richard Pryor was holding back in the gawdawful Superman 3. The director of that movie wanted to try and make it for laughs and was hoping Pryor would do some fun ad libbing. Instead, Pryor stuck to his lines, word for word, which were obviously written by a hack. Why? Because Pryor was a HUGE Superman fan, and he wanted to show the script respect and refrain from doing his own thing. In retrospect, his comic genius could have saved that turkey of a film. It's sometimes hard to believe that good actors would revisit certain characters they've played even when they know the script sucks and the movie will be a dog. But actors gotta eat too, and sometimes the studios throw down too big of a wad of cash for them to walk away from it. Besides, actors also get typecast. You think it was easy for Reeve to find another acting job? He was SUPERMAN for krusty's sake! The only reason he got to make Street Smarts was that he partially funded that movie with his own cash. |

Oh yeah, and Superman IV sucked golf balls through a garden hose, it blew so hard. And Connery is James friggin Bond, Scottish accent or not. |
