To have any surgery done in Shanghai, let alone eye surgery, is like playing Russian roulette. I would never go anywhere else than Hong Kong or Bangkok.

You will of course never get statistics or clear facts in China. But I talked to both my local GP, and my eye doctor in Hong Kong, who both advised strongly against having this kind of surgery done in Shanghai because of high failure rates. Because they are the specialists, I tend to believe them. Secondly I would never take any avoidable risks where my health is concerned, to save a little money.

Ok, do you have any place to recommend for eye surgery in HK? Have you done it?

For those who consider doing lasik (it does not matter whether you want to do it in China or not), please read up some stories at www.lasikdisaster.com.

Friends around me told me how good they felt after their lasik surgery and I was very keen to follow their footstep but after I've read about the risk I decided not to. You only have one pair of eyes!

I would suggest to consult Dr. Vincent Lee at the Adventist hospital on HK Island. He has been my eye doctor for the last 8 years. I have not done it myself, because in my case it could only be done on one eye. So I still would have to wear glasses. Didn't make sense.

Freddie,

any news about the 2 places you were about to check?

I'm interested too. Not because it is cheaper here than in Europe, but simply because I live her, and it would not make sense to go back to Europe only for the surgery.

Keep us posted.

I went to the best doctor in Taiwan. I went to 3 hospitals in Shanghai just to check it out and their old and rusty equipment to even CHECK your vision scared the **** out of me. I've been doing research since 1999 on Lasik and I was pretty up to date 3 years ago, on what the best machines were, the newest safe type of laser... etc... and none of them knew about it. (As I expected). So, I flew to Taipei, found the most experienced doctor, and did it there. And I went back to the Shanghai hospitals for checkups and they're all like "this is perfect....!!"

These are your eyes people!!! If they screw up one fraction of a millimeter you'll go blind!! That happened to my friend who tried to save money on this and she thought she went blind until she flew back to the states to get it fixed.... I saved up for months for this "Lasik Vacation" of mine... and it was worth every penny. Of course if you can find a good doctor in China.. good for you.. but I'd ask for credentials and research the machines they use first!

A former colleague of mine in Europe also had his eyes done and it went even worse. Remember that your eyes change throughout your life, so something you change now might create larger problems in the future as you can't keep on having lazik !

You MUST do tons of research on the doctors you choose!! I'm the most paranoid person in the world and I researched for 5 years.

Hi Fragolina,

Sorry for the late reply. I accidently stumbled on this website http://www.wangvisioninstitute.com/ when doing research about LASIK and since the owner of this institute Ming Wang had a chinese name i emailed him for advice about eye operation in China. Just a few hours later he replied and he actually did the first bladeless lasik operation in China and recommended me to the Aier hospital in Shanghai, according to him the best equipped eye hospital in China. Also, he arranged VIP service for me and their top surgeon Dr. Tong Sun that have done more then 40.000 operations in China will perform the operation. They will do the wavefront and Intralasik to correct my nearsigthness. I was there on monday to do the first exam to check if my eyes are suitable and it took about 2 hours testing on several machines and different eyedrops. Everything seems proffesional and just now iam about to schedule the operation next week, and before that get eye drops(to use 3 days prior to operation) and bloodtest on sunday.

Still scary to get operation on my eyes, but i doubt i would get better service/help in my home country.

You can contact me if you want contact details at persons at Aier or ask anything else.

I found this website good for reading www.allaboutvision.com.

my wife had it done 3 years ago in her town close to shanghai she got lucky the machine was just off the boat from germany and the surgeon was one of the top guy in shanghai also right from the usa and learned in germany as well (the guy was specialist) he came to her town that time to train the future doctors to do the operation

costed me 5.000rmb

took 1 week for interview and check up (20mns or so to check the eyes and see what she needed to be done) then the wek after (there were so many people to do it i should have do it too anyway)

so went back the week after the operation took 5mns................. ok there were many people waiting but every one had their apointments so no pushing ok.

the patient went to the operating room everybody can see from the outside on tv the operation the block the eye open and put a stopper so it does not close during the operation then you can see the surgeon remove a layer of something in the eye clean it with fluid then perform the operation with the laser then put back the layer on top then put some cotton and this is finished.

of course you have to buy some drops 2 or 3 kinds and you have to put them 3 or 4 times a day for about 3 months or something and no water on the eyes for months and of course swimming is not very welcome (for the eyes) showers got to be carrefull.

3 years later my wife could see flies f.....g on the moon ............................
she used to have glasses and contact lenses

i should have do it at the same time now i really need it but as you mentionned i am a little worry nowdays about it

St. Paul's Hospital in Causeway Bay (HK) has specialist lasik clinic, you could get more details here:-

Who did you go to in Taiwan? I may combine it with a vacation as well. Also, how much did it cost?

Has anyone done this since August 2007? I'm considering doing it this year and I'm looking for a reference to the best place in Shanghai. Also wondering about the cost/time frame.

Yeah, me too. I want to get it done here asap.

Any updates from Ffreddie? He/She was going to get it done.

Want to know best place to get it done here in Shanghai, cost (not really an issue) and how it is done. I REALLY do not want to see any type of blade, or experience any type of pain.

This is not possible as there are LASER cuts done in your eye. BUT the pain is not real pain, more like something fell into your eye and it lasts only couple of hours. You feel NOTHING during the process because they use anesthetical drops, you also feel nothing 1-2 hours after it (drops still at work). You can arrive home, take sleeping pills and wake up and feel almost nothing.

Just want to make sure. No way i'm having a blade of any sort near my eye.

One advantage of doing it where you live is that you can get good follow-up if you need it. A friend of mine had it done just before he returned to Shanghai. One eye did not do well and he ended up having to make three half-blind trips back to the States to have it taken care of.

Update! I did my operation about 7months ago at the Aier clinic. I had Intralase(they offer it here) and wavefront done. My eye sight are great now. After the operation you will go there for regular checkups so if you do the operations far away from where you live i think it can be troublesome. I been to the clinic about 6 times since i did the operation and had my eyes examed and tested. Actually i was there yesterday and meet dr.Ming.Wang who recommended the Aier clinic to me. He is here from US this week for a visit. He's been really helpful and are fast replying emails.

if you want more info or ave questions you are welcome to PM me!
