A friend has a theory that our eyes get worse as we age so that we don't look quite so old and wrinkled to our friends. So, if you're thinking of having the eyes fixed, you might also want to put out some money to have the friends fixed, too.

A recent article in the NY Times about some unpleasant side effects of Lasik surgery. Not to scare anyone off of the procedure, but just another caveat. Granted, no one in their right mind is going to let anyone near their eyes with a laser without doing the research first.

I had Lasik done in Canada before I came to Shanghai. There are definitely places in Canada that offer lower prices, but I went for the highest priced procedure because of my very near sighted eyes (the higher the price, the more customization is done). So doing the expensive Wavefront mapping / analysis has been shown to reduce the incidence of night time halo effect when looking at lights. Since my eyes were so near sighted (which put me at increased risk for halos) I wanted to reduce the incidence as much as possible.

Lasik is done in two steps. First, a flap of the cornea is cut so that it is free on three sides (with a hinge left). This is then flipped over. A laser is used to hollow out some of the corneal tissue in the corneal flap. Then the flap is returned to its original position and it heals over time.

The difference between the two major providers in Toronto where I had it done is in the manner in which the flap is created. The flap can either be made with a laser or with a microkeratome. Both are controlled by a computer. Microkeratomes are more proven technology and laser created flaps (Intralase) are newer technology. There are doctors on either side of the fence - those that think Intralase provides an advantage and those that don't. I've heard that with the microkeratome there is more pain after the anesthetic wears off. I went for Intralase myself.

Just thought I would share my experience here.

I went through the LAsik surgery early February (less than 2 months ago) in Shanghai at Aier hospital!

I would recommend it to anyone! It went just perfect!!

The operation itself took less than 3 minutes and you do NOT feel any pain!!!!!

The blade that cuts the flap comes like a shadow above the eye, you don't see any knife Laughing

then the doctor explains that he is putting the laser in front of the eye, and hop, again a shadow coming closer, smelling burnt, and that is it...the doctor then put bakc the flap, puts some drops and switches to the second eye.

I felt dizzy afterwards, but that is just me, I hate hospitals and that day, was at the clinic on a Saturday morning, very early, with no breakfast...

Went back home with my boyfriend, could not really open my eyes during the journey, felt like I had swum in a swimming pool, with open eyes, for 3 hours. But no pain, just an unconfortable feeling.

I slept for 3 hours (which is higly recommended by the doctor) and when I woke up, I could already see very well.

You have to be VERY careful the first week. No water in the eyes, no shampoo or soap, no make-up and oviously, if you plan to be back at work shortly after the surgery, then wear the glasses they give you at the hospital.

Today, I'm still using 'artificial tears' because my eyes are dry when I wake up and after spending hours in front of the PC...but other than that, I'm so happy I've done it.

And please, stop saying that Shanghai is not a good place for this...there is absolutely no reason! As for everything important, check references, ask people you know here what they think if they know anybody who's done it etc...this is what I did, and was happy with the clinic's standards.

On the day of the surgery, there were around 25 other people, which makes you feel safer, at least for me!!

I paid 11800RMB -200(discount) for online booking. Had my Chinese colleague help me to do it.

if you need more feedback, don't hesitate to PM me.

I'm coming to Shanghai for vacation, and I would like to have this procedure done while I"m there.

Is there really a big difference between interlase and lasik?

I would like to book an appointment for while I'm in Shanghai end of July. Anyone have any tips, hints for me...I'm sick of hearing about "oh don't have it done in Shanghai, have it done in Bangkok". What a ridiculous statement, it all depends on the Dr. and equipment. From what I've read Aier seems to be the place to go....

I can't seem to find prices for Aier...

Post subject: Healthway Nobel Eyes and ENT Hospital

Hi,

the above hospital does Lasik and uses the newer wavefront technology which can contour your eyeball. A friend of mine went there about two months ago and was really satisfied. They have foreign doctors and the price is half of Huashan hospital.

The hospital hotline is 13761812971 and the hospital address is 371 Xinzha lu in Huangpu district.

They're your eyes. Do whatever you please. I personally didn't get them done in China after checking out 4-5 places and asking the doctors who trained them and how they were trained, and how many people they've operated on.

Up to you, its your risk.

Post subject: Re: Has anyone done a LASIK in Shanghai?

I know 2 friends who did it in Xiamen a few years ago. It went well. One of them however used to say her "eyes felt tired" in the early months but she became alright and is perfect now.

Lasik surgery like any surgery requires follow ups. Thus only do it in Shanghai is you live here or within easy traveling distance. Healthway Nobel is now offering summer promotion on its wavefront, discounted by 2000RMB.

Where is this Healthway Nobel?

I have been recommended to a Foreign section of Ruijin Lu hospital. Anyone else had it done there?

Went to the consult yesterday, and was very impressed with the facility, staff, and level of service. The doctor I worked with, Dr. Zhang, was fluent in English, answered all of my questions, and explained the risks and possible complications. The consult takes 2 to 3 hours, and they do a number of procedures (pupil measurement, cornea mapping and thickness, and a number of vision tests). The surgeon for the procedure will be Dr. Li, who has reportedly performed more than 10,000 procedures. LASIK procedures are performed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Based on my experience there, I plan to schedule the LASIK procedure within the next couple of weeks. Scheduling is not a problem - they could fit me in as early as next week. Cost is RMB 16K, for both eyes, including pre-op testing and prep, and post-op check-ups.

Will post again after the procedure...

Did the LASIK, and couldn't be more pleased. Total cost was 14K, not 16K, as I mentioned above. If anybody has any questions, feel free to pm me.

BoShiDunRedSox, you seemed to be the only one who's tried Ruijin. I was just going to message to see if anyone has heard of or done LASIK at Ruijin (http://eng.rjeye.com/). A friend had her LASIK surgery there and said Ruijin is probably the best LASIK facility in Shanghai. But that was my only frame of reference. She said her surgery altogether was 8-9K RMB. She's local, so I wonder if the pricing is different for foreigners...

Could be I got charged the foreigner price, but they have a price list at reception, presumably for all patients. I went to the New Vision Eye Clinic part of the hospital, which caters to foreigners, so I guess that there may be a part that handles locals.

Just had the pre Lasik check up, going for the surgery in two days.

The precheck is easy, takes about 2 hours though. But be warned, after just the checkup, you will have difficulty seeing for 2 hours. They put some stuff in your eyes that completely blur them and make them very light sensitive. Be careful when you walk out of the clinic, and don't be expecting to doing anything for 2 hours afterwards.

I'll report back after my surgery.

Had the Lasik at Ruijin New Vision clinic 4 hours ago. Have only just become ok with light. The last 3 hours was pretty tough. Even in a dark room, there were some annoyances.

Actual surgery i could not believe how simple it was. Was like being in a star wars movie, flashing lights, over in 15 seconds for each eye.

Could tell immediately the difference in vision, although blury at moment because you have to wear these thin plastic goggles for first day. Bit blurry looking through them, but i can tell the difference will be there.

Looking forward to waking up tomorrow.

This is AMAZING. Seriously, less than 24 hours after the surgery, i'm guessing about 85% ok. Had test this morning, 20/20 vision (from a +3 prescription). Little swelling, which is normal, and a little light sensitive. But bloody hell!!! Recommend this to anyone. Ruijin New Vision Eye clinic. 14000rmb total.
