Post subject: CultureXchina's new ongoing English Corner inside Villa

We've been so busy partying that we lost our focus on English learning sometimes.

Therefore, CultureXchina is starting an ongoing English corner inside a preserved landmark villa , fully redecorated on Xinhua Road and Dingxi Road each Saturday.

Date: August 5th (Every Saturday)

Time: 5pm - 9PM

Villa location:

No. 580 Xinhua Rd. cross street Dingxi Rd.

What's available here?

Guaranteed line up of foreigners/Native English speakers

old and new friends from CultureXchina

pool table

internet bar

karaoke (all updated songs similar to Cashbox)

movie room

full bar

English mini-adventures (example, learn how to play pool)

future barbecues (if weather permits)

This will be an ongoing hangout spot before we go out partying elsewhere in town.

A real clubhouse for you to speak English and just play hard every Saturday.

Entry 30RMB includes 1 drink, snacks. We are sure you will meet a lot of new friends here and if it's too early to go clubbing.. come lounge around and kill time before the clubs open.

Foreigners - FREE entrance with 1 FREE standard cocktail/beer or drink and snacks but must chat with english corner attendees.

All standard cocktails and regular drinks 30rmb

How about foreigners who speak bad English? Do they qualify for entrance and drink?

For me, not all foreigners are native English speakers. When we say foreigners, we are hoping for fluent English as their native tongue.

why you 'seperate' foreginers into a couple of groups? i think most (all?) foreigners here speaks very well english. i have a friend, he is a kiwi.... i hv problem understanding his english because of his 'native tongue', thats why when i want to communicate with him i would prefer to use SMS rather than talk to him. Laughing Laughing Laughing

so... not all 'native tongue/native speaker' have good oral english.

Exactly, why said "Foreigners free entrance" if after you said "English native tongue"? a lot of foreigners NON-Native english speak very good english. For instance a guy from Germany can go for free? What about a Swedish born chinese? will it be free for him if his english is Good?

Sheesh people...so the guy wasn't exactly politically correct. If we take what he meant to say literally, foreigners would mean any non-PRC nationals. Now whether or not that's a good idea, I'll leave up to you guys to debate.

Post subject: It sounds a discrimination

You said it is an English corner, or a member clubhouse, so all the participants should be equally treated. But why the foreigners are free for entrance and drinks but the locals are not ?! It sounds a discrimination! I hate to see that discriminations are attentively created in many places while people are dreaming to be equally treated.

Very simply put, people who want to learn English come to talk to native English speakers. We cannot afford to hire so many english teachers. So this is one way to attract them as guests, since they are providing a service. It's not disrimination, if u are asian and can speak fluent English, you can come in free also.

Deleted.

I take back what I said of good things about this, because I just went there tonight with a lot of foreigner friends and there was nothing there!!!
So I cannot recommend anyone to go there.

for a coke and a smile it is not a big deal. It is not a free evening
Maybe all who want to get paid will have thew people speaking to them buy a drink.
Incredible.
What I want to know is how much some non english speaker is paying to talk to us and what the take is for the venue????

Just stop talking about money and foreigners vs. locals, and let the rest of us use this opportunity to get more contacts and friends here.
I am not in Shanghai to only hang out with white people, I can do that at home.
I wanna get as much out of this as possible, so thanks for the great idea!

Yes I agree, whenever I am around people who do not speak English as well as I do, I always send them a bill afterwards. I think this is only fair.
