The Shanghai Museum is excellent. High on the recommendation list. The gift shop is above the norm and there is a small cafe should people wish to take a break.
Shanghai Museum of Modern Art brings in some interesting exhibits and is the first privately owned museum in China (I think).
The Shanghai Art Museum is in an interesting building (the one with the clock in People's Square, where Kathleen's 5 is located) but as a museum, it isn't spectacular. |

The one at Thumb Plaza in Pudong has constantly changing exhibitions of modern art, audio/visual, interactive stuff. Almost always very interesting. A new exhibition just opened. I think it is worth a visit especially at 20RMB per ticket.
The one on Duo Lun Lu also has good stuff. Don't know what is there now but they have a National Geographic photo show recently that rocked.
The Shanghai Art Museum can be hit or miss. Cheap and well air conditioned.
MOCA in the middle of People's Park also has a changing collection of strange modern stuff.
There is a new private gallery north of Fuxing Lu on Mao Ming Lu that has some real nice stuff: Dali, Yamamoto, Chagall rug?, plus some folks I have never heard of.
Science and Technology has some interesting stuff if you are into that kind of thing. |

In my opinion there are only 2 decent museums in Shanghai - i find it quite lamentable the lack of museum culture here. But The Shanghai Museum is fantastic, i rate that a lot and has a great gift shop too.
A more fun one but equally as diverting is the one at the bottom of the oriental pearl building. It's in the basement and is a pretty interesting history of shanghai mostly covering its 'heyday' in the 30s - told through some really fab little dioramas - albeit it the 'rich lawai' version of what it was like to live in Shanghai, but cool nonetheless.
I've never got to the jewish museum but would be interested to know what people think of that is it worth visiting?
I think the science museum is a big white elephant - half the exhibits don't work and it's largely empty and of couse, is mostly only in chinese....only good for little kids who are amused by pressing shiny flashing buttons...poor.
The aquarium is a bit pants too...it's fine, and one of the better attractions, but not up there..worth seeing though if you're really bored. |

Shanghai Museum is excellent and I agree with Mags about the gift shop.
There is a small but very nice museum under the Martyrs Memorial on the Bund at the north end. Mostly photographs but in English and Chinese. Free too.
The Shanghai City Planning Musuem in Peoples Square sound a bore but the model of Shanghai is stunning in its size and detail.
The Shanghai Art Museum is worth the visit to see the building. It used to be the Jockey Club in the 1920-1930's.
I have not been but I have been told that the Maritime Museum which is in Jiao Tong Uni is very good. |

I forgot about the city planning place. They have changing exhibitions on the 2nd or 3rd floor too. The last time I went the place had made some improvements too. |

I'd recommend the Shanghai Museum in People's Square. Most of the display is Chinese artifacts, organized into halls of jade, ceramics, etc. A good selection of the kind of stuff you can find in most big Chinese museums (i.e. up in Beijing, or at the National Palace Museum in Taipei). There is usually also a temporary display on loan from somewhere else - sometimes very good.
The Shanghai History Museum under the Peal Tower is a must visit to see something more specifically Shanghai oriented. European focused but still very good. Just as an aside though, I was surprised at the sloppy attention to detail in their recreated interiors of 1930s Shanghai shops and houses. For example the booze selections are just totally wrong. Lots of the brands are modern, or old brands whose bottle and label design has totally changed since the 1930s. It wouldn't have taken a genius to go and find brands that still exist from the 1930s with largely original bottle and label design.
The Shanghai Art Museum is probably worth a visit too. The display changes regularly and the building is nice. |

I didn't like the Shanghai Museum that much, but then I'm not so interested in jade or calligraphy, but if that's what you like then it's a pretty good museum and it has some excellent temporary exhibitions there sometimes. And the building is amazing.
The Shanghai Art Museum is good and also has some good exhibitions there as does MOCA.
However I find museum visiting here quite tedious and fustrating, especially if it's busy, as people are very inconsiderate and tend to walk around looking at the exhibits with their noses practiacally pressed against the glass! So plan to go when others don't! |

Duolun Museum and Zhendia Museum (the one at Fang Dian Lu Carrefour) are usually empty unless it has a super popular exhibit like the National Geographic photos, which I think would be crowded anywhere. |

Go to Duolun Modern art museum, that whole street is really lovely, full of antique shops and arty stores.
Plus, Moganshan Lu, up near Suzhou Creek and Longhua temple, is great for a whole bunch of little galleries jammed in together in old warehouses. very interesting place. |

Great thanks for all the recs. I've been to the Shanghai Museum- nice display, organization and layout. Found the permanent collection a bit boring though, but has some great exhibitions. |
