| Post subject: Is it possible to find a job in business without Chinese? |
Hi everybody,
I am currently looking for a job in Shanghai and I don't speak Chinese. Most of the ads I have seen so far require at least a conversational level of Chinese. Is it just my bad luck or is it really necessary to speak Chinese to get a job here.
I am looking for a job in Human Resources. I am a psychologist with another degree in management. I started loosing my faith so please can some share your experiences about finding a job here.
Really appreciate,
Magnif. |

In general, yes. Depending on your experience and resume, if you could get into a senior mgmt position for which you were ideally suited, it might be less of an issue. However, there are so many people who want to come here and so many foreign educated returning overseas chinese who have the language - speaking reading and writing, you will find these positions will have a lot of competition with language is one of the factors that goes into the choice. One possiblel route is consulting, and another route is teaching ( depending on your background, you may be able to find something with one of the MBA program here teaching). If you are serious about making a go of it in China, I would take an concentrated course in Chinese now while you have the time and motivation. |

Is it possible to find a job in the US without English? Yes, but the selection is limited to servicing that community.
Is it possible to find a job without Chinese in Shanghai? Also yes, but again, it will be a very limited scope that can tolerate workers who do not speak the local language. Ad michale posted, areas of international business MAY allow for such postions but these are often expat positions where there is budget to help support a non-native speaker in China. Have to agree that making a cencerted effort to learn Chinese is your best bet. |
