| Post subject: carry on restrictions |
does anyone know if there are any carry on restrictions out of PVG similar to what we are encountering right now in the US? Such as, no liquids, lipstick, etc. |

They should have done that decades earlier, specially in this country. People carrying to much junk with them on planes anyway. Specially oversized stuff. Hence nothing leaves on time here. I hope this stays. |

I hope it doesn't stay. It is a complete overreaction to a minor threat.
In the pre-September 11 environment the world knew about this threat (assembling a bomb on board the aircraft) and at least one aircraft was attacked in this way, but nobody did anything. Now post-September 11 the world is expected to jump to attention because the American government suddenly decides this is an issue?
It's going to totally f8ck things up for buying duty free since you'll be restricted to buying at your destination. Pudong airport duty free? There is nothing worth buying there.
And why not spend all the money going into highly ineffective airport security on improving road safety or something? They would save far more lives. For years they were employing monkeys to confiscate nail scissors and pocket knives for goodness sake! What a complete waste of resources. |

No books? no computers? These restrictions are impossible to continue. The authorities continue with the knee jerk reactions to problems, with no real long term solutions. Look at all the restrictions imposed after 9/11. Did they continue? Of course not, it was too problematic and too irritating to fly. In the same way, these restrictions merely inconvenience everyone for the short term, and don't solve the long term problem. |

So far according to the local papers they are enforcing carry on restrictions. But in the UK they have announced that the restrictions might be eased.
I agree with Andreas though that often people are hand carrying far too much, often well overweight for the overhead lockers. |

Best bet is to check directly with the airline you are flying |

When I dropped off guests this morning for a Northwest flight to Tokyo/US they handed them a flyer listing restricted items - liquids, lotions, etc. They also had a notice posted that said that all carry on luggage was being hand searched and to check any items you wouldn't need on the plane. The e-ticket check in machine said that they were each allowed 3 check in bags so it looks like they have increased the limit to discourage carry-ons.
When I flew from Beijing last week they were asking to open and smell liquids - they opened my water. |

Checking and smelling water has been a common thing way before this incident. Some even ask you to finish drinking the bottle of water. There was once my friend was carrying Holy Water up the plane and was so worried that she'll be ask to drink the holy water up.
Hahhaha.
dfoo, no books and no computers??? You gotta be kidding me!
Do you know how these people handle our check-in luggage? My laptop will probably be irrepairable by the time I have arrived my destination.
I understand from Singapore Airlines that toothpastes are also not allowed and I cannot imagine for those to go up the plane and overnight flights to go without toothpastes.
All of the passengers will go down with bad breath!!! I know some airlines do provide toothpastes but some don't! So it's not just the restrictions have tightened, I think airlines should do their part to show consideration with the lesser things we can bring up the plane now.
ship, checking with the airlines is not a safe bet coz' ultimately, the people who do the checks are the airport authorities, I believe. So checking with the airport authorities should be the best bet. |

interesting article. Here is a quote:
| Quote: |
The vast majority of online correspondents Thursday were preoccupied with disrupted travel plans; irate at new restrictions prohibiting travellers from carrying laptops, books or suntan lotion into passenger cabins; convinced Britain and the United States were begging for trouble with the belligerence of their foreign policy; or deemed the episode a carefully orchestrated hoax by officialdom to distract their attention from the policy failures of Western governments, the unpopularity of the Blair and Bush governments, and a plot to keep the public in perpetual fear to make it more accepting of successive waves of legislation stripping them of their civil liberties — one of which happens to be making its way through the British House of Commons now.

No toothpaste allowed in your carryon.
Just flew in from Narita to PVG. Northwest. At the checkin desk in Narita, they hand searched all checked and carryon luggage.
At xray security, they checked all carryon luggage that xray picked up something suspicious (my sake).
At the gate just before boarding, they hand searched all carryon luggage (a 3rd time) of every passenger. Needless to say, we were an hour late.
My half drunk bottle of sake was confiscated but my colleague managed to get her cosmetics (lipsticks, gloss, and creams) on board with only her chapstick and water confiscated (she put the lipstick, gloss, and cream into her jacket pocket after security but before heading to the gate, banking correctly that they wouldnt pat her down).
No more duty free booze or cosmetics allowed in your carryon. Cant buy on the plane either.
good luck.
and screw northwest: 5 bucks for a beer on an international flight?! c0cksuckers. |

At Pudong on Monday they were just doing the standard random hand searching of checked baggage.

I'm with you on that one - ridiculous! At least they are still giving pillows and blankets - I flew their red-eye flight from CA to MI in the US and they only had one pillow/blanket per row of seats. |

Sorry cack - just finished a long-haul flight and yes I called United and they were able to tell me exactly what I could not carry onto the airplane
in general airlines as a business bear the brunt of passenger grumpiness - these restrictions directly affect that so they are doing what they can to alleviate distress by keeping abreast of luggage restrictions |

Well, with so many checks ... I can imagine how many hours ahead I should be at the airport!
ship, glad you were able to check with United on the prohibited items. I'm sure it must be a long list of stuff!!!
Can you guys tell me how many hours ahead should I be at Pudong airport before my flight? I know the usual's 2 hours. |
