Hi all,
Has anybody had any dealings with this hospital:
UPMG International Peace Maternity Hospital
Just found out my wife is pregnant so moving back ot Shanghai from Beijing... I would go to Bangkok as I really feel China is such a rip off and don't understand how they think they are better than everybody else and can charge such huge prices when the health care in Thailand is far superior at a third of the price..
Anyway, any info would be much appreciated. Shanghai United is out.
Thanks |

Hiya,
I gave birth at International Peace & Maternity (March 2005). I guess that they hopefully know their equipment better by now (they had just moved to a new building in Dec 2004): the bed collapsed (with me holding my baby) when they tried to put it back to the normal position, the "panic" button was not connected, so you really have to check carefully if all the applicances work OK. It's a Chinese hospital with WEstern style equipment but you get the Chinese service (but at least the staff was more friendly than the typical Chinese employees).
They kept strictly to my birth plan (at least with the key points, i.e. natural birth), but ignored all minor points, e.g. keeping out non-medical staff during examinations (just send me a PM if you need more information). I also felt a little bit like a zoo animal since they kept visiting me and my baby (the only one being breast-fed in the hospital).
If I were pregnant again I wouldn't go back but would probably go to UF (even if they charge you a fortune). |

Hi Angie,
Thanks for the info, we are going to have a tour of the place so for sure I will jump up and down on the beds and press the emergency button a few times..... Hopefully they should have everything in order.
Somebody wrote to me and said they were really good, will check them out and report back.
Thanks again

My son was born at the International Peace in NOvember 2005. We had aobsolutely no problems whatsoever, in fact the beds were special beds from the US. I guess by our time, the teething problems that Angie probably encountered have been dealt with. I would say we got our moneys worth and more from this hospital and they don't cost an arm and a leg, their charges are at least 1/3 to 1/4 of the expat hospitals and clinics.
Feel free to PM me or send an email to tanmolina@gmail.com if you have any questions.

I was wondering if there are any books on having a baby in Shanghai. The above insights are great, but I almost dont know what I dont know at this stage - it is early days yet but will be my first. Any tips or pointers would be appreciated. |

Miss Maoming,
What type of books are you referring to? Books on pregnancy in general or specifically having a baby here in Shanghai. I can help you with the former but not with the latter. No sure if there is such a book to be honest.
I have 2 kids in the last 3 years, one born in France and the second born here so would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to PM me.

Dear Esther,
Thanks so much for your response. I am quite in the dark as this was not planned and only realised by my partner and I a couple of weeks ago! I am in a bit of a spin on both fronts - ie 1/ having a child and 2/having a child in Shanghai. If you have any books on pregnancy that you can recommend I would be interested.
Regarding Shanghai there seems to be a fair bit of information on Shanghai Expat but it also looks like there is Birthwise, LLL and International Mothers Support Group that might provide some invaluable insights about pregnancy here. I will contact them aswell.
Thanks for your kind offer to PM. I will keep it in mind once I have some specific questions.
Cheers, |
