| Post subject: English Accents |
England is a strange country. They call private schools public schools and their accents range from pure beauty to almost indecipherable gibberish. On this ship I am on now, the Casino manager is from Liverpool. I seriously, can barely understand the guy. It really sounds like a completely different language. One time, when he was talking, I literally thought it was a different language. Fukuman has a beautiful accent. He really speaks nice like Bellabella. Pabloc Picasso sounds like he was raised from the British slums, but I can still understand him. |

Comparing with british accent, conversation with jap is saturated with confusion and misunderstanding. |

US is a strange country too. A president who cannot speak English, and some accents so draaaaaaaaaaaawn out that you fall asleep waiting for the end of the sentence.
You should try Glasgow AJJ, now there is an accent! Or someone who speaks broad Geordie, you would definately need a dictionary. |

Don't talk to me about the Glasgow accent. I used to drink in a bar where a local gangster type from Glasgow drunk. He was into some really dodgy stuff and not a man to be crossed. I was afraid to talk to him as he had such a strong accent I could understand maybe 20% of what he was saying and really didn't want to misunderstand him.
My lecturer at Uni was a Geordy. On his reading list for the course the number one book was "Larn yersel Geordie" A Newcastle to English phrasebook. |

They call private schools public schools

This is from the old days when children went to the school closest to home. Schools only accepted children from within their allocated districts. Then Certain schools of fame arose, parents were willing to send their Children away to schools not in the vicinity of their home and such schools were able to accept students from outside their district. Hence these schools that were accepting students from far away where called Public schools, mind you education wasn't free back in those days.
Such is true even in the colonies, the adder attended a GPS ( Greater Public schools ) school. In modern terms it was a private school, but the public school namesake continues, state run schools where simply known as state schools.

There used to be a comedy TV series called Rab C Nesbit in the UK. A great actor called Gregor Fisher played the man of that name, a neer do well from a Glasgow council estate who dressed in a suit (stained and torn) a grubby vest and trainers and avoided work at all costs.
When it was shown in England they had some parts subtitled so the English could understand it.
We had a number of Glaswegians in our crew and they all seemed to talk out of the side of their mouths. But whatever Glasgow is a great night out. |

some people in the south of england have horrible accents!! some london accents are really ugly! what accent you have in england is also often related to class, your parents and your upbringing as well as whereabouts you live. So you can have someone from the north of england with a very standard accent and someone from the south wioth a very countrified accent.
I have a pretty standard English accent i think, apart from guessing that i'm from the south no-one could guess what part of england i'm from. Pablo has a definite north london accent and Commando has a slight west country lilt. GC is clearly scottish as you can't understand a bloody thing he says (haha!!)!! I think the worst english accent by far is a birmingham accent, anyone fromt here with a strong accent immediately sounds stupid! |
