| Post subject: damaged furniture... help |
Hey, I am about to move out of my unit and my kitty has ripped up 4 dining chairs, a futon cover and the plether couch. I am trying to think of ways around this so I can get as much bond back as possible.
Does anyone know a company that can re-upholster (re-cover) furniture?
Or somewhere where they sell cheapish furniture (I asked my landlord to have a look at ikea and she picked out the most expensive sofa and chairs)... blah! Help help! Or anyone want to sell me their non-ripped up furniture? Anything... because I am not paying 5,500rmb out of my bond to the landlord... or am I being picky? |

I think our relationship is good... she bought me a birthday cake when it was my birthday. I am really scared I am going to get taken for a ride, and if I were a rich-as*e expat I wouldnt care but I can't even get the money together to pay the bond on the new place...
Maybe if I cry she will be nice? Please please please please help someone... |

How much do you evaluate the price of these things if you have to replace them? Does it look like cheap stuff? because if it is, then you won't need to give your 5,500 rmb to the landlord. Also reread ur contract if there's any special points. |

ok thank you...
the stuff looks medium. The developers supplied all the goods... so they are the same in every appartment room in the building. I had thoughts of stealing other peoples furniture but no... that's bad. And I tried talking to management and they were useless. The furniture is NOT worth 5,500rmb!!!! I wouldnt even pay that in Australia!!!!
Maybe I could see if anyone living here would want to swap furniture for 1,000rmb? They get the same furniture... just a little torn up... hmmmm... |

You could go to IKEA to choose some similar furnitures by yourself or some furniture markets. I know one furniture market around my place but it might be very far from your place. |

If everyone in the building has the same furniture, you probably don't want to go out and buy something new - the landlord might not accept it. You may be screwed here - I had a cat do damage to an apartment once, and the landlord kept almost all my deposit to get the repairs done. That is the problem with having pets in a place you rent - you get charged big money when it comes time to pay for repairs... Maybe your kitty has some money she can give you? |

yeh I am thinking of training up my kitty as a web designer so she can earn her keep!
I refuse to get screwed here. I am taking Thursday off to go on a mission to find a new couch for under 1000rmb!!!! And tonight I am getting my tweasers and mini sewing kit and using my handy skills to put the rest of the furniture back to what it was! And I read the lease and it says 'reasonable wear and tear' is fine. I think my kitty reasonably scratched up this furniture... I would too, the colour is gross as man!
Ok can someone hit me with the address of the furniture market? I shall be visiting Thursday... |

I know there is a cheap furniture outlet somewhere east of longyanglu in pudong, so if you're on the pudong side gimme a pm and i can ask some friends for the address.
I just moved to puxi, so I dont know any cheap ones. If anyone knows a cheap furniture outlet over here, please share! Especially now with an emergency and everything... Good luck with the kitty and the landlord.

You could just try negotiating the value of the damage with the landlord. If the damage is only worth about 1000rmb to repair, you're better off just losing that out of your bond than paying the same amount (or possibly more) for new furniture. That said, it depends how reasonable your landlord is - they, of course, have the bond in hand and could up their claim of the cost of the damage at will. At my first place here the couch was pretty trashed after I was done with it (mostly stemming from many a late night on the grog), I paid the landlord a bit over 1000rmb for that plus some other assorted things that were admittedly my fault. In the end I thought that was a fair amount and it was settled without much fuss. |
