Illiterate and proud of it. Don't fill in a visa application with that kind of jibba |

A girlfriend of mine was once denied a visa to the U.S. because they thought that as a single female, she might try to disappear once she got there. This was despite a letter from her Fortune 500 employer, stating that she had been with them for almost 10 years and was making good money. The irony of it all was that she ended up going to Australia first, and then using her Aussie entry and exit to help gain her U.S. visa. So, I seriously think that sometimes, it comes down to luck of the draw! But generally, Australia can be tough on people with no travel history so going as part of a tour group may be her best best! |

I think the Aussie visa regulations have toughened up just recently. Immigration is becoming much more selective and is slowing down a bit, I guess because the UK and US were much stricter with their regulations, Australia and Canada were the popular choices for quite a while, now they're just starting to put the brakes on it a bit.
Though if it's just a tourist visa I don't see why it's a problem, I don't think in Australia it'd be that easy to get there on a tourist visa and just do a runner. |

Why don't you call up the embassy and ask them the best way to do this? If she's been rejected a visa once, applying again won't get you anywhere. |

I stayed in Aussie for one and half a year. It doesn't seem very hard to get a student visa but it took a long time. In my case it's 9 months long. how about to apply for some other type of visa? |

simple, get her to go to a travel agency and book into a tour, since they will help her get the tourist visa, and also after some dicussion maybe come to some kind of arrangement whereby she (your gf) stays on for a while longer and/or has spare time outside of the tour to do her own thing. ofcourse it would be helpful that you accompany her when she goes to the travel agency, so they can discuss everything with the two of you. |

Good idea. Once you r outside, it will be much easier to get visa extention or go for another country. But the travel agent will charge u alot, alot, alot more than u do it by urself. I have been NZ before I went to Aussie. It only took me 2 months to get a student visa when I was outside China and applied by myself. |

I think its highly amusing that a travel agency can get a visa while a person individually applying cannot. The regulations are the regulations. Don't the various western nations care that their embassies in China are so obviously accepting bribes? |

i think there is a presumption that the tour will ensure the person returns to china. not that they can guarantee it completely, but the history of the tour agencies is taken into account. similar to how it is easier for a first-time applicant to apply for a US visa through the amcham visa referral program. |

That may well be the theory -- but you and I both know that in most cases the tourist is left to their own devices in the country that they visit. Why on earth a western nation would want to deny a tourist visa for a girl that has a decent job and in many cases a house is a mystery to me. Do our idiodtic governments really think that someone wants to leave shanghai and illegally work in a western country?
Its particularly a mystery for Canada! We have a SHORTAGE of people. More highly educated hard working immigrants are needed in our country. |

I think it depends on which country you are from. If you come from 'terrorist' or 'poor' country then your chances are very slim (depends on your luck and not on requirement). The world is not fair. |

Despite two decades of rapid growth China remains full of people who want to leave and live somewhere else - legally or otherwise. There is a whole industry in locals falsifying their visa and immigration applications.
Plus a shortage of people doesn't necessarily translate into a need for Chinese immigrants, who (at least in New Zealand) are all too often only there to get a subsidized education and then jump ship to Australia or some other place. |
