Sorry folks, need a little assistance here. Been to the website, but information is very scattered.
For instance:
"Only those having passed the strict physical examination are allowed to register for the race."
http://www.shmarathon.com/english/n_xz_cs.asp
Does this mean I have to actually sit in for a medical examination before I'm allowed to register?
And it doesn't really explain very clearly how and where exactly to sign up for it?
Plus, when's the deadline for signing up?
Apologies for the barrage of questions here, but it'll pop my eyes out if I were to scrutinize every line of information just to find what I'm looking for...
Thanks in advance. |

The signing up only starts in October after the holiday. Then you can also download this file and send that to the organisers. I think the deadline should be somewhere late October. Pcikup is like one week before somewhere in a special office for the laowais...
As to the medical check... i think that is ok... last year I didn't do any. You just sign the disclaimer and your are good to go! I agree the website is bad, but the race overall is decently organised... however not compared to international standards...
Kiwi, only half? I guess it is a bit late to start training for the full now... we'll run the full in Xiamen in March. I am going for the full... orignally wanted to do Macua, but this is just more convenient... |

I went to the Full last year, i will run the full one again this november. I hope not to have a business trip this week. I also might attend the Sahara one in Feb 2007. Not sure, tough one. |

The info on the site is confusing but foreigners definitely don't have to do the medical check.
And yeah, I'm only going to do the 1/2. Too late to start training and in any case doing a full in Shanghai looks no fun. They only give you a small part of the road and unless you are at the very front you will have cars being allowed to cross in front of you.
I did the 1/2 in 1.30 last year and those just behind me were being made to stop and wait for traffic.
Xiamen seems the nicest city in China to do a full. |

Are you serious? There are cars on the road too? What providing bananas and chocolates at the water stations? Or do we have to bring our own energy foods? |

No bananas or chocolates at the water stations, no beer either, and no white gloved waiters feverishly throwing daiquiris together for thirsty runners. However they do give you a choice between water and something sweet (I think it was some kind of sports drink). There are sponges too.
Yeah, there are quite alot of cars on the road. From memory I think the runners more or less have the road to themselves for first 5km or so, then after Jing An Temple you move onto Yanan Rd. where you still have plenty of space but there will be traffic on the opposite side of the road. As you move along Yanan Rd. they gradually reduce the number of lanes open to runners until the runners are sharing their side of the road with some traffic. Later on you move off Yanan Rd. and onto smaller roads, and there will usually be traffic on the other side of the road. If you are running fairly fast the traffic won't be too heavy but it still isn't that great. Xiamen is much nicer - a properly closed off seaside road. |

Nuts. You guys have made me realise I'll be running along with cars. I don't mind that terribly but the exhaust pollution situation happens to be pretty severe in Shanghai and it's just no fun to be running with cars, and having to stop to let cars pass.
Bummer.
Was hoping to have a car-free, endless-road-with-no-stops run. ..
Ooh I'm looking to join the Terry Fox run! |

The Terry Fox and Health Run will suffice for me. I'll need to get Shanghai Chef in training too.
Bugger about the cars on the road. I'm not keen on that! |

wow, i feel like to join too. but anybody can provide some tips about taking marathon training? i've never ran any marathon before, so the marathon or half marathon is too much for me. i'm thinking about to attend the health run. but still, without doing any jogging or running for years, how can i get my body ready in so short time(2 months?)? any tips?

i will b doing the half.. I think i'll be easy to recognise. Since Kiwi's warning about the traffic I am going to wear a 'please-don't-run-over-me-and-it-won't-help-if-you-honk-coz-I-am-weari ng-headphones' t-shirt.

I will also do the half, just like last year. Did not do any medical examination. Also cars on the road last year, very disturbing but you need to focus. I wanted to do the full one this year but too busy to train everyday, only time to do 10km 3 times per week. |

I will do full... hopefully the organisers will clear up more road space than last year. The marathon is getting bigger each year and getting more attention, so its profile should increase as well. The only problem remains the route which is through the least attractive areas in Minhang.
I dind't actually get obstructed at all, as police was pretty strict. The more annoying people are the pedestrians and cyclist who sneak through the police barriers. In the end this will only motivate and anger you, so you run faster!
Jonna, be careful with running with headphones here... there is a lot of traffic averywhere and especially those really silent electric bikes sometimes surprise me! |

I will positively collapse at the half. Health run for me, first, thank you very much. Anyone wants to sign up with me?
P.S. I'm still clueless about where to sign up... |

Is it just me or is the form on the "online sign-up" a copy of the 2005 form, and not really an online sign-up at all?
I am organizing a group for my company - have e-mailed the organizers about a group sign up process but no response yet... |

Also, does anyone know if they give out medals to finishers? I know it's silly but it's such a huge motivator, especially for anyone who has never done a race before. |
