Post subject: Haggling

Wink Now that Xiangyang is no more, there is a lot of talk about the new 'baby XYs'. I visited Pearl City before XY closed and found deals were harder to strike. Recently I've been going back. Despite the influx of XY stallholders, prices are still being kept high compared to 580 Nan Jing Xi Lu, where haggling gets a decent deal. Don't be afraid to walk away - you'll find the same goods in the next 'shop' or just a couple of doors down. I bought dvb jeans recently and a couple of branded bags for under 1/3 of the trader's initial asking price. Happy shopping.

If I bring a friend or two can we still go? I went to 461 Jin Hui Lu the other day (a few XY type stalls and quite a few more for locals) just before a bus load of tourists were dropped off, all in bright yellow Aussie t-shirts. You could hear the stallholders calling up and down the lines and the prices didn't drop then, too much trade to be had.

On the topic of Haggling. Apart from XY markets, it seems that haggling in other places is NOT welcomed?

Is that true? I went to XuJiaHui, and tried to buy electronics, and it's fixed price?? and then went across the street (is it Pacific??) where they have the stores selling foreign brands (Adidas, Fila ....etc), and again, no bargaining at all??

I am not sure I am in China?? how did the rest of you do with haggling ?? any luck? or should I go to another place?

It depends what you are buying. In the brand name stores I don't think you can get a discount.

If you are buying computers and such you can definitely haggle down the prices. If you go to the small stores on the 2nd/3rd floor of the electronics center and you are a foreigner they will likely try to ask for 2x or more the actual asking price for smallish things (such as cables and such). Bigger things like hard drives and such you will likely not get much of a discount.
