DA, it all depends on how many SEEDS are providing that file for you. The more seeds, the faster it will go. Also, torrents usually start slow, and then speed up. |

I'm late to this thread...
I'm kind of interested in what kind of rates do you all get downloading popular shows like Lost for example....?
With no network traffic, one of my mates with an identical configuration can get up-to 200Kb/s download, whereas I struggle to get more than 50-60Kbs/s download under similar conditions. In fact, I tend to upload faster than my download rate (Any advice would be appreciated on this).
Fill in the following...
Provider: China Telecom (Shanghai)
Location: Near Jing'an Temple
Plan: ADSL 1.5MB/256kB (upload/download)
Torrent Client: Azureus
General Download Rate: <50kBbs
General Upload Rate: 60-70kBs
Platform: Mac OSX
cheers,
crikey

My guess is that you are being choked out by your upload rate. Lower the max to 30 kb/s and see what you get. |

I'd add to this not to drop your max upload rate TOO low, as this can result in slower downloads in my experience. Experiment a little and find the best level for you. |

I use utorrent -- of course, you cannot get it for mac unfortunately Most popular shows, such as Lost, I can get in less than an hour if I'm not downloading other stuff at the same time. I frequently get rates far in excess of 100 kb/s. Max is ~220 kb/s (which basically caps my pipe). I cap the upload to 30 kb/s, and 10 kb/s during working hours (9-5). Even capping to 10 kb/s doesn't seem to affect my download rates. I always seed to a ratio of 2.0. |

You guys are going to love this...
I compared the use of 'Transmission' and 'Azureus' with 2 torrents with >100 Availability ratios.
Using installation defaults, except for an upload caps (30kb/s), both clients reach download maximums of 45-50kb/s.
I used each client sequentially (no competition for bandwidth), and each program had its own dedicated port for TCP transmission.
Computer, network or ISP problem? I'm also pretty sure that my network speed is kosher. I told my landlord I wanted 1.5 to 2Mb connection speed. No worries eh? I've tinkered with every bloody setting available, and still no luck.
So, with no other options, I checked my phone bill (I pay the ADSL fee by the month). The cost is RMB130, which according to a China ADSL plan ad I dug up indicated the 512K plan. So I called China Telecom, and they inform me that we have 512K, not the one I had asked for. That explains the 42-50Kbp/s cap. The upload rate is the same for the 512K through to the 2M plan.
I'm off to talk with my landlord to fix this. Yeech

For what it's worth in my last few months here, can you let us know what plan you upgrade to, how much it costs, and how much difference there is in torrent speeds?
Thanks a lot crikey!
Oh and thank you to whoever sticky-ed this thread, hopefully it should help to answer questions for Torrent Newbs |

I originally had 512k -- top speed was around 50 kb/s. I updated to 1.5 which costs 150 a month and I now get speeds up to 220 kb/s. |

To upgrade or install ADSL, only your landlord/line owner is can deal with China Telecom (who would have thought it?!).
You can pay 1 year upfront on your ADSL. I believe the only advantage is the free use of an ADSL modem. Otherwise, you can pay by the month & of course, no free use of the ADSL modem.
Rates for paying by the month
ADSL 512K download (said to give 45-50Kbp/s) with unlimited rate upload (up to 200Kbp/s apparently) = RMB130 + your landline costs.
ADSL 2M download (said to give 180-200Kbp/s) with unlimited rate upload (up to 200Kbp/s apparently) = RMB150 + your landline costs.
There are also a 1M plan, but really why would you bother when RMB20 extra gives you a lot more bang for your buck.
My operator said that the changes once approved would take 24 hours.
Let's see how this goes?
Also, my tip of the day from this webpage...
http://en.chinatelecom.com.cn/products/01/t20060316_7937.html
You can arrange to talk to an English-speaking China Telecom operator to help explain ADSL plans and other things to you. You will need some basic Chinese.
1. Have your latest telephone bill ready.
2.Call China Telecom on 10000
3. Press '1' for Personal accounts, and then press '0' for an operator. You must press when they give you the option, not afterwards (this frustrated me).
4. Talk to the operator. Say that you want to speak to an English-speaking operator. The operator will inform you that an English-speaking operator will call you back. You must provide your telephone number (mobile or landline), the name of the account holder (your landlord) and/or the address on the bill. Say thanks, and then hangup.
5. Depending on how busy they are, you will receive your phone call in 5 to 20 minutes time.
6. Chat away and ask your questions. |

One thing about Azureus is that when I'm online, mine seems to be affecting the rest of my internet. Pages won't load, email won't come in. Must be a setting somewhere. Any suggestions are appreciated. I'll play around with it later this week too to see what happens. |

Without asking more questions, I would guess it is a simple question of bandwidth - there's a limit to how much data you can pass.
One way to change it might be (assuming windows here) to use task manager to change the priority of your browser, so it is above Azureus. It may not make a difference, but it might work! |

You should cap the upload rate. If you don't have any setting Azureus (and most torrent clients) will eat all available upload bandwidth which will really hurt your other internet experiences. |

Yes of course, Dfoo is spot on. There's been some discussion on this thread about upload capping, I generally set mine at 30, which allows for a good share ratio without losing my download speed. |

I have been having problems with scrapetorrent, perhaps because of the severed undersea cable, or other causes? But isohunt.com and btjunkie.org still work well. |

Yeah, it's the Asian Internet problem. Scrape, for some reason, is not working well. Many of the others still do. |

I'm not even trying to download right now. As soon as I think the internet is working properly, I'll give it a go. But for now, I can't be bothered.
Someone will write 'I've been getting download speeds of 9Mb per nano second, it's ok for me' and that is good. But I will wait till I have regular, dependable internet, before I start waiting around for Greys Anatomy to come in.
Let's just hope they get it fixed before Feb 7th.......

Azureus sucks compared to utorrent: slow, memory hog, buggy, ... BitComet uploads faulty stats to trackers, so if you are downloading stuff from a tracker that measures the ul/dl ratio BitComet is probably not the best tracker out there as you might get banned.
Meanderer, you heard about Camtasia videos? You should make a video explaining this stuff to people. Would be awesome. Videos are very small and the quality/size relationship is pretty good.
Check it out at techsmith.com. |
