| Post subject: Another kind of taxi scam in the city |
today took a taxi to GuBei Carrfour for my place and normally it takes about 6.5km, around RMB 22-25(max).
But when we arrived, it was RMB 28, there was no jam and also no long routing.
The receipt which I got from the driver (thinking it is ok and we expats are very ignorant) showed he charged RMB 3.20 per KM and the whole trip took 10.1 km. This is one of those non-regular brand taxis...
On our return, we took another Jingjiang Taxi, the fare came up to be RMB 23, 6.5 km and RMB 2.1 /km.
Although this driver is not as ridiculous as those in Longyang, but this is also quite bad enough for us. |

I read somewhere that approx 10% of the taxis in Shanghai are fake taxis. They are not controlled by the taxi companies (although they drive in their colours), they often lack in service, attitute, and well-functioning taxi meters.
If the driver didn't take another route I guess the taxi meter was rigged, or he didn't reset it. If it was rigged, just imagine that the same taxi driver would charge you for more than 80km if you went to Pudong airport from your place! |

HAHAHAHAHA
NO GOOOD.
Most of them are rude mofo's. But then, I can manage to yell back at them in the first place so they won't take another longer route. I hate how they function in the Whole China. But I guess if you're a taxi driver yourself you'll try anything to test the passenger and juice more moola out of them |

you can check on those that are not controlled by the real taxi companies,
they're private and have an X have the 沪
like 沪X123456. that's the plate of a private taxi.
costs like 500000 RMB, but you're free of the charges from the taxi company. |

To my personal experience, Shanghai is not much worse than some other big Asian on European cities. Anyone who ever touched down in Incheon after 1AM can not find any regular taxi there. 100% guarentee to be ripped off...... Good thing about Shanghai is that all is regulated very much, so you just have to be aware of which taxi you take. Stick with the big companies and there will be no issues. That's why they have color coding, you know upfront if you will be scammed! |

Sometimes I see single cars in the suburbs being painted at small shops into taxi colors...
They probably won't scam you, since they don't exactly want to draw attention to their taxi. |

Yeah it is so angry to see how people don't waste time to take advantage from others no matter how much money they are taking off. |

I don't think any metro goes there.
BTW...this is the first I heard about "colour coding", i just thought they were different companies. So what does each colour mean? I've just been hoping into any cab that stops for me (though I don't take many cabs) |

I think the 3.2RMB per KM starts to kick in at 10km or something like that as standard pricing. you weren't charged at 3.2RMB/km for the whole 10km just the bit that is over the threshold
The difference in distances is a large one but a lot of these less reputable taxis under inflate their tyres so that the distances measures are a bit more (or a lot more). |

White = JinJiang Taxi
Orange = QiangShen (Johnson) Taxi
Light Blue= DaZhong Taxi
Green = BaShi Taxi
Dark Blue (not exclusively their colour) = HaiBo (used to be Called NongGongShang/NGS)
Several registered smaller companies who started up taxi service with the City's blessing as it kept laid off workers off the Unemployment rolls run with Dark Blue& Red cars.
Most Maroon cars and some Red ones are AX and BX plated cars that are technically allied with a company but the cars are individually owned and barely regulated. Some of the BEST and WORST drivers are in these cars. |

Totally agree.
This isn't a scam.
A scam is what happens to your friend that decides to come into the city from the airport on their own (midnight arrival) and gets ding'ed for 500 RMB.
At least there's some good info about how the taxis operate and who they are.
Thanks all for the interesting info. |

I was "taken for a ride" in a maroon taxi a few weeks ago. What had cost on average 40 RMB cost me 140 RMB just because I "let" the driver go around traffic. I know my way around well enough but forgot a rule of mine to tell the driver what I was willing to pay prior to my trip.
I paid the 140 and won't be getting in any maroon cabs anytime soon.
The Metro is shaping up nice! |

Oh yeah, forgot the rest of the story . . .
. . . I took a picture of the drivers ID and photo, called the company, they had no record of him. Imagine that! |

Anyone who bitches about taxis in Shanghai needs severe help! The taxis here are cheap, efficient and the drivers generally honest -- which is more than I can say for just about every other place in the known universe! |

Agreed. The couple of times I've been ripped off (and I take at least 1 long taxi ride per day) you just call the company up and they refund twice or three times the amount you were cheated by.
Thumbs up for Shanghai taxi fellas I reckon! |
