Expect the right amount. If its an MNC they have lots of experience or lots of benchmarks or both. With others negotiate.
By the way, just in case you were interested in amounts, are you coming as Management Trainee or General Manager? |

Thanks. This is a British global company with plants in U.S. Europe, Canada, and China.
The position will be the Chief Representative in charge of their Shanghai office with a group of 5-6 people. They have a office in Beijing too with 2-3 people and Beijing office reports to me too. The company has plants in other cities in China but we don't report to each other. Shanghai office will help whatever the plants may need. This position directly reports to the CEO in Britain. |

What is the package like for a GM position in a multinational company in Shanghai?
For example, does it include child education, accomodation, etc....? |

It really depends a lot on the company, the type industry, and what the expectations are of your office to produce revenue. It also depends alot on if you WANT to come or not. The more the revenue expectation - the higher the pay. In general, Shanghai is not considered a hardship posting. Bonuses, stocks, are usually pretty well defined in a large company. As a rule, the starting place should at least what you are making now ( it can go farther in Shanghai depending on your lifestyle choices ) with an appropriate bump if you are getting a promotion.
There are several threads in the forum where this has been discussed at length. |

You also have to consider that the work hours here are very different from back home!
GM salaries are very different depending on the company. You also have to consider Health Insurance, Driver, Housing. If you look at the forum, many expats get 4-6000,- USD for housing, have a private driver, pocket money for the wife and the husband still makes 500.000,- USD+
Also remember that you have to pay taxes here and with a high salary you might pay as much as 45% |
