Post subject: Recommended headhunter / recruitment firms for US expat'?

Hi Guys - a long time lurker to this forum and now needing some kind advice. To make a long story short, I'm US expat' and live in Puxi since last July. My company is undergoing massive changes and now wants me to return back US. Since I/family just moved here, established a lifestyle, & have kids in SAS school - we want to stay in Shanghai.

So does anybody have advice on preferred local headhunters/recruiting firms for a US expat? I searched the various forum posting but didn't see any explicit headhunters/recruiting firm names. Greatly appreciated if you can send anything my way - thanks!

Best Regards,
Rick

YariGuy : from your previous postings I discover that you know a lot about the finance industry in SH. I am unemployed and looking for job. My experience mostly in securities, asset managment and research analyst. Can you provide me with contacts to those in the industry? Thank you in advance.

Actually I'm in management consulting. Securities is pretty general. In terms of asset management, I think there's not a lot of that here. Mostly in Hong Kong (unless it's with one of those disreputable firms you see popping up on this board). In terms of research analyst, most of the investment banks do have coverage in Shanghai, I believe. I definitely know Merrill Lynch (across from the Kerry Center?) and some other bulge bracket firms are here. Also, there's the elite Chinese ones like CITIC. As far as I know, though, they pretty much cover Chinese equities and all the equity research analysts I know are Chinese.

There are a lot of PE and VC funds on the ground here sniffing around for investment opportunities / acquisition targets but again most of the analysts I know are local Chinese. I have some friends in the same boat -- they are ethnically Chinese but aren't hired because 1) they don't speak Chinese well enough and know the local market or 2) they won't accept the low pay.

Sorry, this probably isn't that helpful.

Oh wait a minute, I did see this foreigner in my HSBC branch the other day. Freaked me out -- he was dealing with an elderly Chinese customer in Chinese. With the banking sector opening up in Dec / Jan 07, there may be positions for asset management (which, by the way, is sorely lacking here). I don't have any contacts at HSBC though in SH.

No sign of any Asset Management positions on the HSBC China website. I believe all the fancy investment banking, securities, etc stuff is done out of HK.

I've met a bunch of people from Wang & Li at OCN events, although they seem to specialize in bilingual/bicultural execs.

Check Shanghai Daily, City Weekend, 8 Days, etc. Basically any of those expat-targeted publications

Hi YariGuy & answerer - sorry for delayed response, I'm in the semiconductor/technology industry (sales/marketing/finance) and in the dreaded middle-management layer. Over the past few days, I have been contacting the seemingly endless recruiters based in HKG. There's a ton there and some have Shanghai offices. Otherwise, finding a few locally here in Shanghai, but nothing compared to HKG. I also am seeing a pretty healthy Singapore recruiting base too.

I'll keep plugging away, nothing really obvious to me yet for comprehensive Shanghai recruiting firm source (hmmm - maybe a biz opportunity here Smile )

Best Regards,
Rick

Why don't you contact other semiconductor companies directly? I'm not very familiar with the industry but I heard Intel is in some turmoil right now so may not be good, but there are a bunch of others. Try Fairchild?

Not sure if it helps but you may start with SCMP website which has a lot of job listing in HK (also a lot for China):-

http://www.classifiedpost.com/jsresult.php?quickkeyword=Shanghai&fuzzy =y

also in the site there's a directory of headhunters which may be of reference.

Hope it is useful to you.
