Post subject: Ye Shanghai Endless Dim Sum - mediocre

Got tempted by their advert in the City Weekend so I went to try it out on Saturday, but was really disappointed. The menu selection was very limited, the portions were small (onion pancake was the size of a half dollar cut in fours), and the service was poor. Was wondering if anyone else had the same experience or perhaps I just went on a bad day?

Oh... one more thing, the endless dim sum was suppose to include a drink but the waiter said our table water with a slice of lemon in it (not even Evian or Chinese mountain spring water in a bottle) was counted as our drink order. Is that true? My husband said we got ripped off and that the waiter lied, he refuses to go back there to dine ever again even with or without a promotion going on at their restaurant.

One more question, should we call to ask restaurants in advance to find out if kids get are discounted coz they charged our two kids the full adult price?

There are better choices for all you can eat type place ( though don't know about dimsum). Brazil BBQ and the Teppanaki Place on Dong Ping are worth a try.

Yes, you should ask about kid prices or servings up front.. if its not written down or agreed up front. .you probably won't get a break.

Never been to Ye Shanghai dim sum buffet, as I heard the portions were tiny and choice limited.

We went there also - would never go back. Service slow. Don't care if portions small since it's unlimited. They ran out of stuff and never told us and waited and had to ask them. The kids were offered fruit drinks.

Whenever we walk into a buffet, we always TELL them that the kids should be half price AND my youngest is free (5 years old). Then I mention that that is the case in EVERY restaurant.

We prefer the Shangri-la Pudong for endless dimsum. If you go in/finish before noon - there's a further 10% discount. It's the same price 88RMB ++. Few people at that hour so service is good.

Most importantly, unlike Ye Shanghai, the Shangri-la food was actually good.

We have eaten at Ye Shanghai in Pudong - Citibank building a number of times now. We bring visiting relatives there for the endless dimsum, which we think is tasty, well presented & the menus quite extensive. plus they've recently expanded this menu so they now have even more choices. the drinks we always get charged for, but it don't matter since the value for food is so good. the service is also good, a little too attentive but very efficient. I've no complaints about this restaurant!

I have never seen any place in Shanghai that had the faintest clue about Dim Sum.

Dim Sum buffet in Shanghai seems like a bit of a waste to me. Best way to go is a la carte. Crystal Jade in Xintiandi is a favorite of mine, which has tasty Canto and Shanghai dim sum... I think if you eat until you're full you generally still pay less than 100rmb. If you wanna pay even less, there's always Bi Feng Tang... not the greatest, but c'mon... 24 hours.

YUAN YUAN have all you can eat dimsum from 12:00 to 3:00 eveeryday.
Its only 38 RMB per person. Its not bad. the only problem i had was they do not have a menu in english, so i had to look at eevry order that was coming in and ask the waiter to help me tick what item i wanted.
You get more than your 38 RMB if you go there hungry.

Dimsum buffet at Pudong Rainssnce is good - may worth a try. These day found another place for dimsum buffet also good, building name forgot but inside the hotel opposite Thomson office building along first corner on Wei Fang Lu (near Century ave.) It always hang a red banner outside the hotel to promote the dimsum buffet. There are 3 prices depend on the no. of choice of dim sum but we always go to the highest ( I think RMB78) because much more choice of food including noodles, congee etc.

I was surprised they serve dim sum at 7:30am in HK...but we ate there and it was awesome!

There were 2 good dim sum places out in Qingpu, though it was not an eat all you can eat buffet. But they both closed down and now we can't find a good dim sum restaurant around (aside from Bi Feng Tang...and that is so so).

Kao ya is so right.
JW Marriott's dim sum is up there on my fav list. Another little known place is near Yu Yuan off Zhong Shan Dong yi Road (along the Bund) in a building next to Xiao Dong Men. It's called Ah Yatt. Sous Chef is Hongkongnese so you can't go far wrong with it.

I have to update this. I went back to the Shangri-la hotel Pudong again and I would never go there again. They must have changed the chef....coz it was lousy.

Try....Mon to Fri, at Superbrands Mall, 6th floor, - 5Y dim sum! Not hau kau or siu mai but at least 20 different things. It's called Tang Dynasty (not the chain), no english in the front, next to the Macau Restaurant, in the front of the mall, with fish tanks (traditional cantonese restaurant) and lots of people waiting. 3 people, less than 100Y (we ordered regular price items). English dim sum menu. worth going!
