"What were the Founding Fathers thinking"

Well language has changed Magnolia you ignorant dumbtits.

"Peckers Point" - a pecker was the person in charge of measurements of rations on board a ship, after the word 'peck' - a unit of measurement for foodstuffs, as in "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper corns"

"Shag Point" - A Shag is a seabird, rather like a small cormorant

(Various) "Knob" - a Knob is a spit of land that sticks out to sea.

"Bobbin Head" - likewise a head of land, sticking out to sea, while a bobbin was the wooden spindle cotton or wool used to be wound around and stored on. The names are often descriptive and in this case the land jutting out probably resembled a bobbin. Many of the names are after people of the time.

"Twatt" is an old viking name. It means 'cwnt'.

What about Condom in France. It's where they invented unwanted pregnancies.

‘Niggerhead Point was documented on maps of upstet New York as late as 1943.” Mark Monmonier told listeners to Australia’s ABC radio, “but was changed to Negrohead Point in 1955, and then to the less offensive Graves Point. All ‘” place names were abolished in the US in 1962, but Squaw’s Tit in Arizona remained until; the 1970’s, and removing all the Jap, Dago, chinese and Wop names has been a more piecemeal affair. And when the authorities changes Whorehouse Meadow in Oregon to Naughty Girl Meadow in 1968, there was such an outcry locally that the name was restored in 1976.”

Monmonier was describing the disputes that have raged for decades in the US, over place names deemed to have derogatory, salacious or inflammatory names.

“The disputes mostly arise when incomers from different ethnic backgrounds object to the topnyms or traditional names used by local people. For example, Finnish immigrants to Paska in Ontario objected to their town’s name because in Finnish it meant ‘shiat’, and outside pressure forced the inhabitants of Swastika in New Mexico to change their town’s name to Brilliant in 1940. But residents of the fishing village of Dildo in Newfoundland have successfully fought to retain their name, and maps of the American continent are still peppered to this day with dozens’s of Tits, Nipples and Beavers.”

ABC 27-6-06 and New Scientist 5-8-06
