thanks, this is one meaning I already know. What are the other meanings? I'm thinking when a verb precedes it then it changes to a verb compliment (V.C) but I do not know the meaning of this V.C.

I think the meaning of Qi Lai as V.C is to emphasize a status change. For example, 跑起来 means start running. Another one is 富起来 means becoming rich.

Hope it is helpful. Smile

jenxyzhou, thanks. From what I have read, it seems like it means something has started. But then I read something like "Kan qi lai" - "seems/looks like" and the idea seems strange.

Oh, I forgot this case. I don't know why. But I can give you some examples to see how we use it.

With "Kan qi lai"
"Zhe ge cai kan qi lai hen hao chi" - "This dish looks very tasty from its look"
Without "Kan qi lai"
"Zhe ge cai hen hao chi" - "This dish is very tasty"

With "Ting qi lai"
"Zhe ge di fang ting qi lai hen ke pa" - "This place seems horrible from what I heard"
Without "Ting qi lai"
"Zhe ge di fang hen ke pa" - "This place is horrible"

There will be more cases when you talk to local Chinese people.

"qi lai"has several meanings. Besides the basic one(get up), it also could be:
1. an action strats and continue, "yu xia qilai le"
2. express the meaning of gathering or attaining a certain purpose, "ba shu fang qilai"
3. an action is in practice, "zhe ge dongxi yong qilai hen fangbian"
