Post subject: Shanghai to Putuoshan night ferry...

...how hideous is the journey in the lowest class? And is there a discount for booking in advance? And any general advice on the 12 hour journey would be appreciated. As well as how much accommodation is going to be this time of year...

Thanks!

I went to Beijing on the overnight "first class" train and still had "company", but the bathrooms were kept up and a chinese box lunck was given for dinner. When we went ti lijiang bunking overnight, we had two others and one talked in her sleep. The bathrooms smelled, and I never used them.
Enjoy

janlynn... I'm confused about your posting. OP is asking about the ferry to Putuoshan. Whereas you're talking about the Z train to Beijing, and then something (a train? or bus?) to LIJIANG... are you talking about the one in Yunnan province?!

my mistake then, calm down haha. You need to drive 2hrs to Wusong harbor to catch the boat, you know that right? fastest way to get to putuoshan: you can fly to Zhoushan airport and then take a 5 minute ferry to Putuoshan.

fast ferry is 3-4 hours and leaves between 8AM-9AM. you can buy the ticket up to 2 days in advance from the ticket office under Nanpu Bridge. ticket includes bus ride to the dock. otherwise, you can book transportation+hotel from CTRIP. oh yeah, don't worry about getting sea sick; it's like a lake out there.

just in case anyone still wanted to know, the slow ferry isn't that bad. I travelled in the cheapest class but one, and I don't think there was much difference between that and the very cheapest. Wasn't too bad - much like the hard sleepers on some of the older trains. You do need to have a lot of time though, as it takes something like 12 hours from what I remember.

The slow ferry used to be really horrendous, but I took it more than 10 years ago. I would very strongly recommend the fast one - it is MUCH faster, MUCH safer and comfortable, and not that much more expensive anyway.
