Yep, I am with you on that. There's not much special here. Mostly overpriced pretentious crappy places, with even crappier service, run by people who don't have a clue about running a bar. There are a few good exceptions, but all in all most gets boring after a while. |

yeah but i think its about variety .... if you go to the same old places then yeah its ****. just mix it up abit.
start at house parties, or go to gallery exhibitons,
i go to all sorts of places from big pretentious overpriced clubs to underground, piss ridden bars with broken glass on the floor that sell drinks for 10kuai. Also house parties are always fun... good to meet new ppl and lots of booze. Then gallary openings etc... you can meet interesting ppl too and not the same old ppl you see in the bigger clubs.
oh and restaurant openings rock.
also get a good group of friends... or just lots of different groups. |

Well you are right, it's about variety. Exactly that's what is missing in Shanghai. It's all more of the same. You see lots of new places open, and when I go and check them out, I always get this 'been there, done that' feeling. Maybe it's just me getting old haha. |

I used to have a "try something new every week" attitude in Shanghai and it was great! But slowly the "new" things became old...
Perhaps age, boredom, lack of genuine "new" things...
Guess it is what you put into it.
In the end, a variety of friends with varying interests, comfort levels at different places, a willingness to try new things and a less-blase attitude helps. I think as expats, we tend to become jaded... while Shanghai offers tons and tons, it can still be somewhat limiting in terms of all that non-locals miss.
Andreas is correct about the "been there, done that" feeling... too many places open without any true soul/feeling/atmosphere... just a tried and true formula for cashing in on the over-valued expat yuan. There are notable exceptions... but they are too far an in between. At least during the winter. |

with good company any bar will do and never gets boring, but finding suitable company can be easier said than done.
if you get bored at the bar, you can either go home or drink some tequila. the unholy cactus juice tends to turn even the most tedious situations into big laughs. |

Unfortunately the latest nightlife scene is largely crap and pretentious reflecting the majority of people frequenting it.
If people had an idea of real quality and were willing to pay for it then real quality might just appear, if you want to pay nothing you get crap, if you want to be 'seen' and pay through the nose for mediocrity then do so and it will thrive.
Bar rouge and M on the Bund/glamour room are perfect examples of the overhyped pretense, windows a perfect example of how to damage your body with cheap low quality booze, the list goes on, but it is about supply and demand, businesses will always get away with whatever works! |

Join a Fitness club, get on a sport team, take a class in Art, learn the language, get active with church... You all are suffering from "me" syndrome, like mentioned above, reachout to others albeit freinds or charitable service... the rewards will be 10fold.
