| Post subject: Anybody up for Yabuli skiing during CNY ? |
I intend to go skiing there during CNY, but I'm not too sure if it's going to be packed with people?
Is this a popular destination for the chinese?
I heard the hotels there are crappy but I know a local girl who said it's possible (and cheap) to rent large houses. The owners cook and maintain the place a la b&b.
If I'm alone, I'll go in Japan but it could be interesting to form a small group and try Yabuli.
Let's talk |

Hi, me and my girlfriend were already looking how to get there and where to stay, thinking to join a tour or book a hotel in advanced, but will be definitely more fun to go with small group! I think that during CNY the place will be packed, was thinking more about March as I heard that it could be very could there -minus 30!
Drop me an email if you are still thinking to go and we can do a bit of planning?

hey Milhy
I talked to people from Harbin and hotels in Yabuli are out of the question for me.
It's true travelling during CNY might be risky so March sounds good as well
I'll contact you
anyone else? |

Chinick,
Lets have a small meeting about it in the pub, so we can meet each other and share some ideas. Karl will be interested as well. What you think? |

Would you have more details of this please? My friends and I would be going at the end of January, they need to fly back home for Chinese New Year, or we could all join up. |

I'm interested in skiing as well. However, read reviews about Yabuli (which is supposed to be the best ski resort in China) and it's nothing to shout about. Might be be better off going to nearby Korea or Japan.... |

Yabuli is the best in China, but it still isn't good. I thought about it too, but it's not worth it. Going during Chinese new year is a nightmare waiting to happen also. The skiing costs will be the same as Canada/US US$50-60 per day of skiing. CTRIP has hotel+transportation packages starting at RMB2400 for 4 days. Ctrip's english website doesn't have these packages. You can just call them up if you can't read chinese. good luck. My shanghainese coworkers tell me just to go skiing at the indoor place here; when it comes to sports, they just have no clue, do they? |

exactly!
I'll get more details and keep you guys posted.
As Milhy said, might be good to organize a small meeting.
Even though it wouldn't work for everybody to go at the same time, the ''pioneers'' could still share the contact and informations |

this past February (just after CNY) we did the ctrip package to Harbin/Yabuli- the ski facility at Yabuli is a venue created for some winter asian games maybe 10 years+ ago and that said the facilities are a tad outdated, musty and unmaintained but if you are going for the "I skied China's premier ski venue" claim it is an okay adventure if you keep in mind a Westerner's notion of premier probably does not match Yabuli's
the runs themselves range from bunny hill to black diamond though depending on snow conditions not everything is open
the "no clue when it comes to sports" idea comes heavily into play as hoards of Chinese skiers extend the lift-queue across the bottom of a run creating an interesting slalom opportunity for those skiing- similarly those trying to ski up the hill in the middle of the run provide additional point value - bottom line if you are a serious skilled skier you may find frustration dealing with fellow skiers...
it seemed many of the skiers were only daybus-trippers from Harbin so the hotel was fairly empty/quiet
not sure if there was a transportation Harbin->Yabuli->Harbin option in the package and we just missed it or what but we took the train and arranged the tickets ourselves - the train was COLD! as in heavy frost on the inside of the windows and still crowded even being after CNY - the SO was treated to a golden fountain from the little boy sitting across the way much to the amusement of the kid's travel companions
all in all it was fun and we are glad we did it but again if you are a serious skier with skill you might be better off elsewhere
hth-
kpmautner there are ski venues near Beijing, Lijiang and Chengdu
http://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/ski/index.htm has a list worth investigating |
