| Post subject: Stonemason craft in Shanghai |
I am looking for a workshop in Shanghai which can make me a big cube out of stone, preferable black slate stone.
Any address or recommendation?
Thank you

A solid cube? or 6 slabs constructed to form a hollow cube? How big? How do you want the connections done?
... I am about to buy some slate this week... I have gone to this factory (in JiaDing district) that imports and cuts quarry blocks... but what I saw around there are thin (2-3cm thick) slabs of marble last time... no slate... but the salesperson looking after my account said he can take me around to get slate when I need some... and I need them now...
If your questions are more specific I can ask for you... or you can come along on my search for slate... |

Perouse : They are at wholesale (unit) prices, cheaper than retail for sure, but you'd have to buy WHOLE slabs (!!) which are huge... typical size of a cut slab would be, say, roughly 1600mm x 2400mm x 20mm... Now you wouldn't want to buy a piece of THAT for your hifi, would you?
Let me know what size pieces you need, and I'll see if I (or they) have some scrap that fit... |

Thanks Comrade... No you're rite that's way too big to use. I'll probably need them in 400mm * 500 mm * 20mm. It's demanding this silly hobby of mine.... |

Hi Comrade
I’m looking for a dark gray to almost black slate with a little raw structure (not cutting raw, surface shall be refurbished).
I need a rectangular cube for my HIFI 1600mm long, 450mm deep and 350mm high (no need to say, not solid).
The stone shall be fixed on a wooden under construction, with rollers.
I need the whole handcraft done, I can do actually nothing except the construction sketch.
Any idea who can make that for me?
Thank you
Rezi
Btw, I’d love to visit the factory in Jia Ding, when do u go? |

Hi, Rezi, It might be too late by the time you see this but I am going to be shopping for my slate on Thursday (today) late morning... If you are working then for sure you can't be coming along... but if you want to come along we can go together...
If you are coming, please call me on my cell as soon as you see this... I PM the cell # to you already...
I am not going to the JiaDing factory this time... they don't carry slate... only marble... the sales rep pointed me to one particular building material market in PuDong, near YangGao Nan Lu... called "Heng Da Shi Cai Shi Chang" (恒大石材市场)... He told me to take the Metro to Century Park and then cab from there... Heng Da is huge... has many different zones like hardware, kitchen-bath, plumbing, etc... the stone market is effectively just a part of the whole Heng Da building material market, just sectioned out with its own entrance...
I was told slate is cheap... I will be buying 10 sqm and he said it should figure no more than 1000yuan... with all the extra cutting, what-nots, and round-trip taxi included... provided I buy the standard stock...
He also said slate usually comes in 3 standard formats :
150 x 300 / 200 x 400 / 300 x 600 (mm)
You hifi platform will need to be either custom-cut pieces, or connected from standard pieces (cut further from them)...
The reno team working for my job right now can probably do the job, but I will have to talk to them about materials (lumber, stone adhesive, rollers, etc.) needed and time, etc... and also how much they want to get paid for the job...
They have been doing a good job for me so far... but I am quite sure they have never made a slate box on rollers for HiFi before...
Anyway, give me a ring if you need more info...
The rollers can be pretty specific since the load they bear is pretty heavy... Perhaps you should shop for those yourself... Do you have some in mind already? |

Perouse : If you are looking for marble, then the size you mentioned can be readily found with regular retailers... Perhaps you can just buy a few cut pieces from them...
What colours are you looking for?... How many pieces of 400 x 500?
I have some leftover from the last job (20mm thick)... the unit price for that particular lot was 800 RMB /sqm... I forgot the sizes though... Have to check...
I also PM you my cell #... Let me know if you need more info...
... you HiFi people are so dedicated... |

Thanks Comrade for thinking us as being dedicated. Many think of us as fanatical. I try not to do the more extreme stuff and instead settle down to enjoy the music but I can justify those slab by thinking that the equipment do need somewhere to sit on.
Thanks for the message. As I am as yet not in Shanghai (arriving next month), I shall keep your contact till I arrive then we can see what comes of it.
Btw, any other hifi enthusiast on this forum? |

Went to the stone market at Heng Da Building Material Market today... The slate shops congregate around the north end of the market... with open air (huge) stalls covering their mountains of stock...
There are about 5 or 6 operators with open air stalls / warehouse all on one side of the road... If you are there and lost (very normal as the place is just huge... even the directory map is huge)... just ask for the stone section (石材区... Shi Cai Qu) and when you get there ask for the slate stalls (板岩店... “Ban Yan Dian" or 青石店... "Qing Shi Dian”)...
Slates in all the natural colours : black, charcoal, grey, green, yellow... polished or cleft... mostly offered in the 3 standard formats mentioned before... custom sizes available on order... shipped in from the southern provinces in at least half a month's time...
The green slate I asked about was offered at 40¥/sqm for the 300 x 600mm format... 30¥/sqm for the 200 x 400mm format... 2 Standard thickness : 1cm or 2cm... roughly for the cleft ones... Chances are I could have bargained a bit more but it was really a cheap thing to start with...
Hope this is helpful for those of you looking to hunt for some stone... And all the best, too, for all you HiFi devotees... I have friends back home with their equipments resting on a board propped on 4 overturned little Chinese ceramic wine cups... They also record... amazing contraptions all around their piano... Fun, fun, fun... |
