| Post subject: Free/Discounted to USA/World no luggage other draw backs??? |
Recently went to Hong Kong/Macau for a visit and while there was reading the local english newspaper which had ads for free or discounted air travel to and from the States from express mailing companies. I have not looked deeply into it yet but it seems the main catch is that you can only use the carry on luggage space and give up the regular luggage space for their mail/package and that you would need to travel according to their schedule. Anyone tried this or heard anything regarding this? Would love to hear if this type of trade off works.
Happy New Year,
John |

yes, my friends used to do it. you spend a bit of time checking into their office at the airport. You give up your lugguage weight and it's usually discounted. You are subject to their schedule.

Yeah, that's always a possibility. You never know with the way things are today.
When I lived in South America I used to go through those courier services and get free flights home all the time. It wasn't really any hassle and they even had a mechanism to meet you at US Customs and clear the bag themselves. Without something like that, I wouldn't risk it nowadays. |

This is a thing of the past. With courier services so developed (DHL, FEDEX, etc.) there's no need to pay for your ticket to deliver a package.
If you go to www.flyertalk.com you can find threads from people reminiscing about how they used to fly courier. |

There are still agencies that handle these things today in Hong Kong. It'll cost about $700 US to send 70 lbs. to the States via FedEx and a round-trip ticket can be had for even less than that. |

Yeah a few agencies run out of San Francisco for Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai. They handle the package drop anc check in as well as the pick up and handle customs so you actually are just along for the flight. they are certified couriers with bonds and insurance and they cover liability on package content since they handle the pick up and customs and delivery. these agencies regulary schedule these flights and sometimes sell their surplus courier seats for a great discount as well. |
