Post subject: Buying a SIM card?

I'm moving to Shanghai tomorrow (!) from England. I have a Nokia pay-as-you-go phone here. Can I just buy a new SIM card for it when I arrive? (It's unlocked) How does the system work exactly?

Also will I be able to buy one at the airport because I want to get connected ASAP cos I need to start ringing people about accomodation. My Chinese is non-existent.

Cheers
Paul

If you arrive at the airport before 6pm, supposedly there is a place in the airport you can buy a SIM card. otherwise, i'd take the MagLev to the other end and then go to one of the phone card kiosks at the metro station across the walkway to get one there. Non-existant Chinese will be a challenge as most people you will encounter will not speak english or will be happy to take advantage.

Sim card should b3 100rmb with 50rmb credit on it already. Some numbers they sell for more b/c they are easier to remember or are superstitiosly "luckier".

But back to main question, yes, you should be able to connect right after buying a local SIM card. Recommend one form China Mobile- stonger system and signal overall.

Cheers!
