Go to Pearl Market in HongQiao, they have a big range of stuff, from cheap to high-end. |

How can you tell it's natural and original? all the pearls are the same to me. |

some of the pearls my mum bought in Europe were fake and the coating came off after a certain time.
Try to scratch the pearls, it should be a homogeneous material. There are seawater and freshwater pearls - the seawater pearls are more expensive; normally you would get freshwater pearls in Shanghai. If the pearls are homogeneous in texture/material - who cares if they are real or not? |

Scrape them against your teeth, that's what I've been told. If they're real, they have a grainy, sandy feel against your teeth but if they're plastic they'll be very smooth on the teeth. I don't know how to tell the difference between fresh and saltwater though. I hear there's a good pearl warehouse? out in Suzhou. |

scrape it with a pen knife - it's really easy - genuine pearls , like chho97 said are grainy and sandy (minerally - for want of a better word) freshwater pearls tend to be flatter and less round and often slightly less costly than cultured ones - the cultured ones are more evenly shaped (rounder), more lustrous and tend to cost a wee bit more although there are freshwater ones whch are also somewhat costly. the less "inclusions", the more evenly-shaped the pearls, the more costly they tend to be. |

Sharon's Shop in Beijing HongQiao Pearl market is very famous among expats. Many famous people have visited her shop. Anyway, I believe she has one shop in Shanghai HongQiao Pearl market, too. The shop will issue you a certificate of each purchase with Pearl Grade and Producing Area on it. I have accompanied my CEO and his wife to Sharon's and they were very satisfied with the quanlity. I personally do not know anything about pearl but the CEO wife is an expert. |
