| Post subject: Can you bring vaccinations with you? |
My husband and I live in the U.S. and will be moving to Shanghai this summer on a two year expat assignment. I am pregnant and plan to have my baby in the U.S. this July. However, my husband will need to move shortly after that and ideally I would like to get out there to be with him as soon as possible. My concern is vaccinations for myself and my future newborn child. Should I get all of the newborns vaccinations here prior to traveling there? Or would it be ok to start the schedule here in L.A. and then finish the schedule in Shanghai(say do month one and two here and then month 4 and 6 there)? Can I purchase the vaccinations here in the U.S and bring them with me to Shanghai for the 4 and 6 month shots?
This will be my first baby, so I am having all of the anxiety of being a first time mom, so add in the move to another country and I am really stressing out! Any insight would be much appreciated! |

Congratulations on all your big news!
It is perfectly fine to start your vaccination schedule in the US and to continue it from Shanghai, we see more and more families doing this. The vaccines in Shanghai are usually imported, though several local brands are also available. (Your physician in Shanghai will help you choose the most appropriate for your baby). Be sure to bring a detailed record of the vaccinations your baby has received so that the schedule can be followed from China.
Some mothers do choose to bring their vaccines from home. If you decide to do this, remember that proper carrying is essential for the effectiveness of the vaccines. Vaccines are live biological substances and must be kept in very specific temperature ranges. It is important to talk with your US doctor and pharmacist about how to transport the vaccines safely.
More and more families are in situations like yours and move to Shanghai either right before or right after the birth of their babies. A group you may find helpful is called Bumps and Babes. (http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/parents-and-kids/pare nt-groups/has/bumps-and-babes/ ). They meet once a month to share experiences, and also have guest speakers in the medical field give advice.
Good luck with your upcoming delivery and move! |

I recently had my first baby in Shanghai and I can understand all your anxiety. On this subject, all my baby's vaccinations were ordered in from a UK pharmacy by World Link and stored on our behalf by them. On other subjects, don't worry too much, there is great medical care here as well as a wonderful community for friends and support. Feel free to PM me if you need anything specific, especially baby related since that is my universe right now. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! |
