(posted for Abendbrot Bakery for Shanghaiexpat )
We are the First Traditional German Bakery in Shanghai,
making great bread with imported ingredients from Europe.
You can get our bread delivered to your home in Hongqiao Area every day, or you
can also find our fresh products in selected places around town.
How does the daily bread delivery works?
Every day we deliver bread early in the morning in the following compounds:
Violet Country Villas, Elite Villa, Lido Villa,

Too early for you? That's not a problem. A number of our customers entrust us with keys
to their compounds so that we can deliver their bread to their doorstep before they even wake up.
And through our payments settlement system, we make it easy for you to pay for your bread once and get it delivered throughout the month.
If you live in one of these compounds and want to have a FREE sample of our products, please get in touch with us (contact information below).

Hey cool.... I've met the German owner of this business and bought their stuff several times from HeLanFang ( A dutch specialty store in my hood. The owner there is a sweet Chinese lady who will chat up a storm with you in English or Chinese and feed you her home-made yoghurt.) and can attest to it's quality. O.K. just for the record I have no connection whatsoever to this business, other than that I've met the owner Karl a couple of times.
I'm not German, so I'm no expert but this is seriously GOOD bread. When I was a broke college student bumming my way around Europe I practically lived off of fresh dark German breads. These ones are as good as any I've tasted in Germany, even from the markets in Munich.
Try the chococream croissant. It's amazing. A fresh croissant with two logs of high quality dark chocolate smothered in custard cream baked inside. It could be the best thing you've ever put in your mouth. |

I'm not in one of the compounds that you mentioned but I live on hongqiao lu near yaohong lu. Would it be possible to deliver here? If so am interested. Please PM me. I'm hungry just thinking about eating some of this german bread. And the chococream croissant sounds absolutely amazing! |

Yeah, I put this up for ShanghaiExpat and karl, but personally, I lOVE his breads. They came by our offices before they opned and had us be "Guinea Pigs" trying out more selctions than they offer now, but they were ALL good! Regular deliveries would be great if i did not live solo...
Really good dark ryes and hard heavy breads, not like the local stuff. MMMMMMmmmmm. |

I'm also addicted to the Laugenstange. It's a mini baguette, but with a chewy, bagel like consistency and taste. It's encrusted with sea-salt and makes a great dipping bread if you have various spreads. I don't know what the English translation of this word is but it should be "little piece of heaven." |

Wow. That sounds worse than I ever could have imagined in English. Much better to stay with Laugenstange. Hee hee! |

Susie, I think they probably can cover you in their delivery area, but it would be best for you to call Karl at the number listed in the initial post to confirm. let him know you saw this posting and I am sure he will be accomodating. He made every effort to cover our office in his route though its only along his Friday route...on the way to deliver to the German Consulate i think. |

Here are some more comments they sent for us to post up for them:
______
We have received some questions from you about the bread delivery locations
and when would we be including more locations in our current delivery route.
Thanks to the support of our customers, we now are also delivering bread in
different spots in the city, so, if you are outside Hongqiao area, you can
also get fresh bread delivered to your house in specific days of the week.
Please check out our delivery schedule:
Mondays: We do not have a particular area being served on
Monday mornings, but during the evening we make deliveries in the
Anting area, close to the Volkswagen factory. If your house is close
to this area, then we can deliver bread to you.
Tuesdays: We also don't have a particular area being served on
Tuesdays, which means we could investigate a specific region if there
is interest enough.
Wednesday: On Wednesdays we make deliveries in Pudong, up to
the German Centre. If you are located close to it, then we can deliver
fresh bread to you too.
Thursdays: On Thursdays our delivery schedule goes all the way
to the A20 highway in Pudong.
Friday: Fridays are Puxi days. We deliver all around the center
of Puxi (but not yet up to Hongkou, check below).
Saturdays: Saturday is for Songjiang, specially the Celebrity
Compound and Hampton Woods area. If you live close to these areas, we
could include you in our delivery route (Gudai Lu neighborhood.
Sunday: we serve the HongKou district on Sundays.
In addition to that, we deliver fresh bread everyday in HongQiao area
as per the map above.
Remember that you can also get our fresh bread in numerous locations
around town, so, if our delivery is too early for you or our delivery
schedule does not fit your needs, you still can get Abendbrot products
around town.
Places selling Abendbrot products:
La'Vanda Cafe: Bank of China Tower - YinCheng Zhong Lu 200
Valley Gourmet: Nanjing Xi Lu 819
La Bella Cafe: YongFu Lu 127
Swiss Bakery: LyYuan Lu 48
HeLanFang: Wulumuqi Nan Lu 130
The Abendbrot coupons hosted on Shanghai Expat are valid in these locations.
Another question that our customers constantly ask us is about how to
keep the bread fresh, considering we just make one delivery only per
week in specific locations.
So, how to have fresh bread every day even if Abendbrot only
delivers once per week in my location?
It's very simple!
The best way to store bread is to put it inside a closed plastic bag
and put it in the freezer. What we are trying to achieve is to prevent
the bread from getting too wet (during the summer) or too dry (during
the winter).
What next?
Then you will need to warm the bread up. The ideal scenario is to warm
up the oven to 200 degrees Celsius and then place the bread.
For how long?
Ideally just a minute will be sufficient. However, if the bread is too
wet, then you will need to keep it longer, perhaps 3 minutes.
And what if the bread is too dry?
Not a problem. If the bread is too dry what you should do is to put a
LITTLE bit of water on top of it and then put it in the oven for 2
minutes at 200 degrees.
One thing you should NEVER do is to warm up your bread at the
microwave! Don't do that.
Instead, get one of these cheap electric ovens (they go for around 200
RMB in Carrefour and other supermarkets). Ideally these ovens should
have a heating element both on the top and bottom of the oven.
We hope that makes your Abendbrot bread experience better. If you have
any other questions about bread, please let us know
Thank you. |

Gott in Himmel! Es gibt echt deutsches Brot hier in Shanghai? Das muss ich versuchen!
Seriously though, I gotta try this. German bread is the best, but I've rarely found it outside of Germany. When I'm there I can and often do live on the stuff. Hope this is as good it says it is...and from the posts it sounds like it is. |

I've already tried a number of different breads from Abendbrot, and think they do a great job.
Even their non-German stuff is awesome: the chocolate croissants are amazing... and I'll get a batch delivered tomorrow
Keep up the great work Karl!

If I understand it correctly, deliveries are made on certain days to the cafes/stores listed above.
What days to what cafes? I like to get my bread as fresh as possible... |

I do not really understand what you mean Missbon. Yu said directly that he posts it for Abendbrot.
I recommend that you try those free samples they offer, because this stuff is really much different (better!) than the other bakeries I tried. |

Missbon doesn't realise my role at ShanghaiExpat. Its ok, we do get many people trying to self promote so its not really THAT off the wall of an assumption for a newcomer. But we do welcome th input when such things happen. In this case, Abendbrot IS a sponsor of our site by invitation from us because their products are TRULY first rate and they have deleivered to the ShanghaiExpat office on numerous occassions, much to the delight of the ShanghaiExpat staff and management. (and yes, once they were formally in business, we DID pay for the bread like everyone else) Hope that helps clarify a bit. CHeers. |

Hi folks
Getbussy was right about the brinestick, we directly copied that. As for the rest, we tried to find some english and chinese names in order to avoid misunderstandings. It is sometimes quite funny what happens if e.g an italian guy orders german bread with german names while he speaks to one of our chinese colleagues.
German English Chinese
Krosse Crispy roll cui pi
Kuerbiskern Pumpkin roll nan gua zi
Roggenbroetchen Rye roll hei mai
Rosinenbroetchen Raisins roll pu tai gan
Sesambroetchen Sesame roll zi ma
Mehrkornbroetchen Multiseed roll pu ti
Kaisersemmel Royal semml sai mao
Sonnenblumenkern Sunflower roll cui hua zi
Passauer Wheat roll xiao mai
Mohn Poppy seed po pi
Brezel Brezel xiu jie bing
Baguettebroetchen Baguette roll ba gai
Croissant Croissant ke song
Chococream Croissant Chococream Croissant qiao ke li ke song
Laugenstange Brine stick xian gun
Milchbrotechen Milk roll niu nai
Baguette Baguette ba gai mian bao
Vollkorn Schwarzbrot Whole grain bread hei fu kang
Bergsteiger Mountaineer bao si tai ge
Hummelgauer Bavarian bread ba fa li ya
Mischbrot Brown bread hun he hei mian bao
Haferflockenbrot Oat flakes bread mai pian mian bao
Mehrkornbrot Multi seed bread pu ti zi mian bao
Katenbrot Vital bread xiang ri kui
If you have other good ideas for bread names, i would be happy to hear about it. You can always reach me at Tennekh@web.de
Thanks |

really and truly great bread but i think it unfortunate about how advertising and 'community' posts are slowly but surely getting harder to tell apart on this site. what is an advert doing in the forum section and why isnt it declared an advert in the header? missbon asked what i was thinking ages ago when i first saw this post. |

So you can supply the bread. Is it that German pumpernickel or the
fluffy bleached bread that you can buy in Asda/Sainsburys/Morrisons ?
Remembering of course that bread does vary a great deal across Europe
and the World - I am in the South of China at the moment and was
given something pink that people claimed to be bread but I begged to
differ. Also had rock solid bread for continental breakfasts in Mainland
Europe, I think that wasn't so much bread as weaponry.
I'm gagging for a decent cheese sandwich and perhaps a bacon
butty on soft unhealthy white bread oozing with butter to kick off the day.
Got any baps ? The comestible variety of course. |
