Piggybank.
I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience at NextStep. I don't know why you have got the impression that the event is a French gathering, because as a matter of fact, 4 of the 5 organizers are American. We do have a strong French turnout, but the American, Australian, and British turnout far exceeds the number of French. I would suggest taking another try at the event. If you do stop back, ask for Joe, I am the organizer that is writing this response to you. I would be happy to sit down and talk.
Cheers,
Joe Constanty |

^I don't know what you really want to talk about now. I mean were you there in the last event?? I sure missed you. And your one of the organizers??? Interesting....
Anyway, you guys advertised that there would be a guest speaker. Where was s/he?? I met about 20 French and 2 Americans. So where were the rest??? I guess they stopped going to your events, because they felt the same as me??? And how about that special drink deal!!! A small bottle of Tsingdao beer for over RMB40?? Yeah, that was special alright! Why don't you just come out and say that you guys are bar organizers trying to lure people in so you can over charge and make easy money?
I posted my previous message a while ago, yet you as an organizer replied it just yesterday. Also it's all so convenient for you to respond only whatever you feel like and ignore other questions raised. |

it is because Americans, Brits and Aussies do work... others, I do not know, they run bars and hang out. |

Piggybank-
I have to say I cannot please everybody, but we try our best to make everyone feel a part of the community. To answer your questions and accusations directly. We are not bar promoters, and there has been only one occaision that we shared revenues with the bar in order to cover all of our costs incurred so far for hosting and advertising this event--it does have costs. In regards to your comment about the featured guest, I am assuming you did not stay until 9pm when I personally introduced Tony Mustafa of The Essential Group. We always have our featured guest come on at 9pm to insure that a majority of our guests have arrived at the event. Speaking to the demographics of the event, it truly is a mixed lot, not something the organization can control. On average its fairly well divided between all nationalities. As for prices of drinks, we get the bars to give you discounts off of their standard fare, sometimes up to 50%, other times only 20% off depending on the bar's restrictions. As for replying, I do not get on to this forum enough anymore, but am trying my best to stay on top of it. Thank you for understanding.
All the best, and I look forward to see you out tonight Tuesday, Oct 16th from 8 til 10 at Mesa & Manifesto. Mark Secchia, the founder of Sherpa's will be on hand at 9pm to talk about his experiences here in Shanghai.
Cheers,
Joe

^if can't please majority of an organized gathering, then don't have one. For your information, I stayed till 10:30pm or even later. Do not assume something you're not sure of! And I didn't hear anyone introducing anybody. Did I miss it because it was too crowded? I don't think so! There were about 30 people or less, 1/3 of them were Chinese girlfriends/wives of Frech members. All I can say is that I finally understood why you don't get any feedbacks on this thread. |

I am sorry we could not please you. I will take your criticisms into consideration and will try to improve our events for you. The featured guest was announced on a microphone, and was difficult to miss as we were standing in the middle of the courtyard. To speak of the number of guests there during the event, we collected over 80 name cards at the entrance on September 25th. All the best in your endeavors in Shanghai, and if you would like to come out to our event this evening I would be more than happy to treat you (PiggyBank) to a TsingDao. Feel free to come up to me at any time. My name is Joe Constanty, and I will be announcing the featured guest.
Cheers,
Joe |

Collecting this data has been very helpful in communicating with the guests for upcoming events. If someone doesn't feel comfortable sending specific information, they are not required to. We introduce our Featured Guest, Jeff Tan, at 9pm.

It's a shame that an organisation aspiring to represent entrepreneurs in Shanghai chooses Park 97 as an event venue. After Babyface, Park 97 is rather high on the list of 'beat up foreigner' venues. Next Step organisers should do more homework. |

Winopete-
I have to say I have never heard of problems at Park 97, in fact I was under the impression that Park 97 draws a large expat crowd. I think you may be mistaken, there is another bar in Fuxing Park (that I will not name) that does have similar problems that you speak of.
In light of that, our upcoming events will be held at Dolce & Gabanna Martini Bar (Nov 13), Jwow Wine Bar (Nov 27), and The Collection (Dec 11). We look forward to seeing you there. |

Joe,
winopete is absolutely right about Park 97, it does have a sh*t reputation, just do some research on this site alone and you will find out what he is talking about. You might as well meet at a hooker KTV joint than meet there.
Just curious - why do the Next Step events seem to attract a slight bit of controversy here you think? Its a bit strange if you ask me - for an organization that is supposedly a service to the expat community.. or is it? |

Everyone is entitled their opinion. Please come to our events to judge for yourself. The event has already been successful in creating a number of partnerships, and creating new business for others. We will be holding our next event on Tuesday, Nov 13th at the Martini Bar at D&G, 6 on the Bund, 1F. See you there. |

Yes, the D&G Martini Bar is a cosy, upscale place. As for Jwow, that's an ironic choice of venue, given that the former foreign investors were shafted by their predominantly Taiwanese business partners. |

That's an interesting point that I was not aware of. All conversations that we have had with Jwow have been with the Australian representative of Jwow, and he has never lead us to believe there have been any problems. Thank you for the insight. Stop by the next event and lets discuss.
Cheers,

Joe, I suppose you have to be thick-skinned about it and not too involved in the internal politics; just that I used to go to Senses very frequently before the 'coup' and the name change. As a venue for your type of event, it's fine. |

if you ask restaurants they might host it once for free or a really good price. Most of the business councils do that, the move from venue to venue. |

Last NextStep event I've been was at jwow. I was interested in Mr Stephan Montigaud, Managing Director of Fullsix Media's speech so I went there. Heard some complains from people that said drink prices at the night of the event were more expensive than on regular nights and that a profit split with Next Step was going on.
As I refuse to go to jwow unless for this sort of event I wouldnt know, but I think this would be a great opportunity for Joe to clarify here for everyone to see that NextStep does NOT make any profit sharing with the events (which would be a shame considering NextStep's emails explicitly mention "drink specials").
A fine event though, I did have fun. |
