Post subject: Did I just NUKE my XBOX?? (Update: I did nuke it! help!)

----------------------------------------------------
Update: *Scroll down to see latest post*
-----------------------------------------------------

So, I finally got my modded xbox from the states here, and i waited to buy a voltage converter to plug it in, as I think I remember reading about some guy on SHXP forums who fried his xbox by plugging it in directly.

So this is the converter that I got:
AC 220-240V~ 50/60Hz to AC 110-120V~ 30W

My xbox has a sticker on it that says:
100V - 127 V ~ 2.1A
50/60 Hz

I plugged my xbox into the converter, then into the wall outlet. When I push the power button, the lights don't come on, but there's a faint "click" sound, as if the hard drive starts to spin up, but stops right away. If I hold down the power button, the click sound repeats.

Do I have the right voltage adapter? and if not, did i just blow up my xbox?? It doesn't smell like burnt electronics or anything. Can anyone help?

Sounds like the adapter is wrong or dead. Don't worry you can't kill your Xbox it has a circuit breaker preventing you from frying it (you might need a new circuit breaker but that's pretty cheap)

maybe the xbox was damaged in shipping? I bought a very cheap voltage convertor from Radio Shack before coming to SH and have been using it for 2 years with the xbox with no problems.

If you blew the circuit breaker or fried the power supply I suspect you would not even get a 'click', my guess is the xbox itself has a problem. But, I'd try plugging a lamp in the socket first, and, also try using the convertor on another 120V device to make sure.

You could stick a metal knife in the socket and see if it works ...

Are there any flashing likes on the front panel? The converter specs look right.

It sounds a lot like there is a short on the motherboard. This thing has happened to my PC when i've shorted a card. the hard disk spins up, short circuit hits the board and
there is a click as the power supply fuse switches off.

I'm guessing something has either become disconnected or there was some shoddy work when you got your mod chip installed and its come loose. open up the box and check for pieces of metal or even hair/dust on the circut tracks and any loose wiring. of course get someone who knows what they're doing if you don't really know what you're looking at.

argh Sad great. I softmodded my xbox - never had its case open, so it couldn't be a shoddy mod job. and no, the front LEDs don't come on.

any idea who i could bring it to "who knows what they're doing"?

i miss my XBMC Sad

If the converter was 30w that will be the problem - the Xbox needs a 150w supply (at least mine does).

Soo....

I DID just nuke my Xbox. My friend brought a smaller power adapter/"converter" from the US, so i was going to give it a go on my Xbox so i didn't have to have this huge klunky adapter by my tv.

ppvvvzt kaPOW! ...and the smell of burned electronics wafted in the air.

new question: Does anyone know if I can get the power supply replaced here? If so, where? Perhaps the PS prevented the voltage from hitting the motherboard and a new PS will do the trick. *crosses fingers*

Yes, easily.

Toy Store -on Changle lu near Fu Min lu
will fix them, or many of the other stores selling xbox stuff. (Actually its getting harder to repair xbox stuff now, as they're totally into the 360 now).

where is a good place to buy 220V-to-120V transformers? My 360 needs 200W, my 100W transformer (convertor?) worked for 15 mintes, then over heated. Is it recommended to, for example, use a 300W one for a 200W application just for the thermal safety factor?

Within reason...there is no downside to over spec'ing a convertor.
REALLY overspec'ing? Burns more juice....throws off more heat.
300W for a 200W..do it.

I use a 500W reversable transformer I found when I lived in Singapore...also interested in a good place here to buy another quality convertor. Tired of switching this one from toy to toy.

fyi, i was curious, so I looked up converter vs. transformer. Always go with a transformer for electronics (vs. short use appliances). Transformers literally step down the voltage to 110 from 220, whereas converters 'cycle on and off' to effectively 'simulate' reducing the current and are often meant for short time usage.

FYI
original xbox = 127V max. * 1.5A = 191W (minimum transformer rating needed) use a 250W one to avoid excessive heat.
xbox360 = 127V max. * 5A = 635W (minimum transformer rating needed) use a 750W~800W one.

You can use a transformer rated at a lower value, but you will notice how hot it gets. The 'extra' heat will slowly degrade the insulation on the coil windings and eventually cause a short in the coils.

No chance of a warranty, once the 360 is opened, all warranties are invalid (unless opened up by microsoft) but to answer your question yes you can buy a modded 360 in the electronic shops, expect to pay 2500-3500rmb, check to se that it is pre-chipped or have a look on this site people regurlarly advertise for sale.

Xbox360 is a good console, a lot of game titles but plagued by the 3ROD problem. Microsoft is giving 3 years warranty but it's only for unmodded consoles (obviously).

well everyone i know has had no problem with there Xbox360 so i think for the most part its clean bet that nothing will happen but if it does there is a 180 day waranty so u will be fine. but as i said before Wii = best especially with the zapper coming out.
