Post subject: Why not tip?

Curious that most people tell me not to tip anyone in shanghai.
I can't help it, especially after getting such great deals on taxi rides and chinese food.
Why not?

Why would you tip ? You get a service, you pay for it. Why would you overpay for a service ?

Why not?

1. China is a no-tipping culture and you don't have to pay extra.
2. If you leave a tip on the table, it will rarely go to the person giving the service. The boss who owns the establishment will get it.
3. You look like a stupid foreigner if you tip. The Chinese view it as Western excess: you have too much money and you're just being silly with it, dropping it everywhere. It's just not understood.

each to their own... tipping is not required here nor in most countries, though can understand wanting to reward someone for their service etc. problem though might be when and if a majority of people tip, then people might start to expect it like in the US.
for my part i just offload the jiaos or the odd kuai depending on circumstances.

^^^^ PRECISELY!

Hobojuice are you from the States?

Don't tip in China, it is refreshing to find a country where it is not expected. Don't spoil it, and roberts888 is spot on, the locals just think you're an idiot giving away money unnecessarily. They don't associate it with reward for good service, they will think you are a flash fool.

Of course, the downside is that you cannot show your displeasure at bad service by witholding the tip.

I've been in one restaurant (Baci) where the waiting staff asked for a tip, several times, when handing me the bill and taking my money. Given the food was mediocre as well I won't be going back there for food.

This is what happens when the 'tippers' start to spoil the market. Baci is frequented by mainly foreigners and tourists of the Hobojuice mentality.

I wonder if the staff at Malones are used to getting tips as there are so many foreigners there. When I didn't leave a tip they definately made it very clear that they were unhappy.

I remember this incident clearly.. Last month I was at City Shop, when an expat couple were in the checkout counter before me. They had two or three large boxes of bottled water which they took out in the trolley to the parking place, and called a taxi. A city shop employee went out to help them load the boxes, ( since they were many and pretty heavy) in the boot of the taxi.. The couple thanked him and tipped him some money, am not sure how much, and the guy was protesting that it was not needed. I was coming out of the store, and the employee passed me on his way in. His face was red, and he was muttering under his breath, something about laowais.. could'nt make out exactly what though, but it was definite that he was NOT happy about the tip... it looked as though he felt bad. Just my two cents.

yeah, I had a colleague visiting from Europe and he tried to tip a hotel employee with JAPANESE money. This hotel employee was clearly offended and refused to take the tip.
If I get good service I say "thank you" a lot and smile instead of leaving a tip.

Tipping is just a bribe and american form of corruption anyway.

Hey, treat me better than the peasant beside you and i give you $5. Serve me drinks at the bar before all these other plebs and i tip you a little extra huh?

Its so shameless and discusting.

Besides it is restaurant owners that try to force the tipping. It is like you end up paying their staff commissions and they can hire at minimum wage or less.

Total scam.

And a lot of countries do find tipping to be insulting. I remember dropping a $5 bill on the bar in Australia and thanking the bartender for serving me and my groups drinks quickly. He crumbled it up and threw it back at me telling me to fcuk off in the process.

The Chinese locals actually tip their doctors when they have a big operation????
This form of tipping is in a red envelope????

I don't understand this - this is worst than tipping wait staffs or taxi driver!!!

After all the arguments on this I finally realized too that even it was OK to tip in this culture, which it is not, you as a laowai are putting many local folks at a disadvantage by helping to set a precedent for tip = better service, the majority of the population can not afford to tip.

Here, unlike in the US, they know when the service is bad, you don't need to remind them by withholding a tip, you may also not know always when it is their 'fault' or someone's in the kitchen, or something outside of their control. A smile vs. not has more weight here than a few RMB.

Tipping is one of the least thought out and understood cultural standards, it's a sign of western ignorance in this area, and it has completely devolved from it's original intent and purpose.

I thought this was given in advance of the operation? Doesn't that make it more like a 'please' (i.e. a bribe), than a 'thank you' (i.e. a tip)?

Actually it was quite common in the past that patients paid a little bit extra to their doctors to make sure that they got good medicine & treatment. The doctors were so poorly paid that they even "enforced" this behaviour by prescribing bad medicine to people who didn't tip them.

No of course, this unethical behaviour is not tolerated any more, and tipping of doctors does not happen (well, if you believe China Daily or CCTV9).

You haven't clarified if this 'tip' is given before or after treatment.

Like I said, if it happens before treatment then I don't think it is really a 'tip'. It seems more like a 'bribe'.

I know all about this unethical behavior. It is still common in Taiwan, so I can't see it disappearing from China any time soon. I don't have first hand experience of this (never done it myself), but I always thought it was given before the treatment.

This isn't to say that expressing gratitude to doctors/surgeons is unheard of in the west. I've seen plenty of examples of doctors receiving gifts (often in lieu of actual money rather than as a supplement though). However, I think the sequence is different. I think that in China the 'gift' is given before receiving treatment, while in the west it is given after.

like a stupid man ?? i think many chinese guy would say thanks or say "bu yong" with a courteous expression.you know, there isnt a culture to tips in china, but ,people there also not ask you to give them any tips.not because they do nt know the tips given in other countries . after all, the tips given or not is by yourself .it's you showing your respect and manners . if you show off or disdain to them by tip , may be they will think you as a stuip guy..hoo...

Its still big here. I'm working at a medical lab and my chinese colleagues all tell me how red bag from patients and kickbacks from pharmaceutical/medical supply companies are so ubiquitous. Most doctors here can't really afford to make a living without receiving these things as their salaries are about a single percentage of what their american counterparts make.
