Post subject: NASCAR

What the hell is a NASCAR. I'm in North Carolina for the moment and all I hear around me is NASCAR. I saw some of the cars and people on TV over the weekend and all of the cars looked kinda ordinary and they all looked the same...except for things like Mountain Dew and Viagra painted on the sides.

Is NASCAR just Formula One in a TransAm wearing a mullet or what?! I totally don't get it.

But, what is it? Are the outside bodies of the cars all the same or do I just not detect the subtle differences. Where it MichaelT when you need him?!

Sigh. you insult Formula One by using it in teh same sentence and then expect an answer...so demanding!

National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). Requirement is that each "model" car raced must be a production model car built and sold in the US. Toyota recently joined, much to the annoyance of some hardcore ignorant folk who cannot accept that just like GM which is the second largest auto company selling in China, Toyota is the #1 car conmpany in the world right now and builds cars in the US.

Anyhow only the shape of the car is stock as everything else about it is full blown hardcore racing but no computer controls like in Formula One where the cars are like jet fighters. Most course, all but two I beleive, are ovals and the cars just go around and around and around. but before you knock it, having driving on race tracks I must say that it does in fact take amazing skill and pateince to negotiate a race on an oval with that many cars and at that speed. So silly sport it may be, but kudos to the drivers who must endure amazing G forces and have a good eye for strategy and endurance. Luckily its mostly left turns Wink.

otehr wise, you can look it up on wiki or google.

i prefer open wheeled racing anyday over stock car racing. but as a true auto enthusiast, i won't knock the racing part of Nascar...their fansbase however is a rather interesting one... most loyal demographic in the world, and HUGE advertising revenues because of it. Football/Soccer has nothing on Nascar.

Thanks for the clarification. I know what stock car racing is...but, back in the '70's the cars they looked distinctly different and would run around Daytona Beach or the Riverside Raceway. These new cars all seem to have an identical body types to me, so I was thrown.

And people looked like this...

uh, in case you have not been around the US much lately, with the introduction of teh windtunnal and Computer generated modelling and design, all the cars on teh road ALSO look all the same these days too. No wonder you can tell if the stock cars are Fords or GM's or Toyotas...

Totally agree, Yu. The differences come from the driver, the pit crew & the highly subtle differences in the model of the cars. Fords are obviously not Chevys. If the team is on top of things, the car will pit faster, have better aerodynamics & better fuel consumption. If not, then perhaps they have too much tape, or the driver is burning too much fuel making turns... and slows them down.

How about Montoya's debut, eh? Not bad for a former F1 driver!

Montoya is a better driver than most in NASCAR as F1 requires more skills and faster reaction due to faster speeds etc, but yeah, good to see him making some money , even if its in NASCAR Wink.

Nice pic Skyline...disgusting one form Tree though :yak:

Montoya used to race in the US in Indy car (C.A.R.T). was actually champion and THE best driver in the past 10 years. His overtaking move on Bryan Herta (spelling?) at Laguna Seca is one of the best ever.

no, not a Nascar fan at all actually, but as a race enthisiast, I don't diss Nascar the way most open wheel racing fans do since I've been on one of their tracks and its HARD WORK! I respect the teamwork as well as the individual efforts required and I must admit despite not liking the demographic much, really am awed at how loyal a fan base the sport has and how their buying power translates in teh real business world. If Formula One could get that following, everyone would make more money , instead of just Bernie Ecclestone.

And yeah, Montoya was CART driver before. Still a damned good driver even if he only drives in cirlces (mostly) now. Wink

Yeeks. That guy with the back is scareiffic. You know how all F1 drivers are really good looking and buy hotels in Monte Carlo and hang out in VIP rooms at exclusive night clubs, etc. What is the NASCAR equiv.? Do they get the missing teeth put in and then go and buy a Motel 6 in some US fly-over.
