Scouse < are you aussie??? Thanks for the info. Might just head over to O'Malleys to catch the game, then. Although a six pack of tsingtao in front of my lap top also sounds inviting.
Was a real skeptic of twenty/twenty cricket before this WC started. But man, this form of cricket has been super entertaining .. The ICC really needed this especially after the badly organised ODI world cup earlier this year. |

no, no offence to them but it was a laugh watching them lose although i was at the edge of my seat watching the semi's, thought they might even snag it at the end. same thoughts with me about the twenties but after watching some of the games, hey it has rekindled my interest back in cricket.. well i will be at o'malleys as i see they have a bigger food selection there, and i m food buff.. cheers |

Twenty20 tomorrow. Do you guys know if any of the bars are going to show it? BTW, I've never watched a 20-20 game; how long does it last? Back in town after a long time and wouldn't mind trying to meet up after that unsuccessful attempt last time. Lots of new restaurants have sprung up and we could try one. |

Thanks!
My relocation will take some more time and definitely not before Diwali. Before I would like to know a few things to plan for the move:
eg:
Apartments where a lot of Indians stay?
(My office is going to be near Zhongshan Park)
International schools frequented by Indians staying there?
Availability of Indian groceries? Cost (2X. 3X etc.)?
And similar questions? |

Hi,
Welcome to Shanghai...
1. Apts where a lot of Indians stay :
Puxi - previously it was Kingswell, Prince gardens in Hongmei road. Now there are very few indians there.
Now most of them have shifted to Yanlord riverside garden, near the Weining road metro station side.
In Pudong, again, some indians in Yanlord gardens, Puming road.
A lot will depend on the school where you want to admit your children to. If your company pays the school fees fine, other wise school fees is quite hefty.
Indian children mostly attend Singapore International School here, because the curriculum, the method ( homework, discipline etc) matches that of India - if they want to go back to India some time soon Singapore school it is.
It is also more reasonably priced than the others. If you want details you just google the names and go to the websites of the schools - all fees details there.
Other people also send kids to Yew Chung Int. and British Int. School - these schools are british curriculum ( though yew chung is more hong kong oriented I think, not sure tho) but fees is quite hefty. Rego Intl. is another british oriented school.
If you want american method of teaching then Shanghai American school has its share of indian kids, too...It all depends on what age your kids are and the tenure of your job here - accordingly you will have to decide.
If kids are very young - below Primary school level, it really does not matter..
If your office is near Zhongshan park, may be you should try and see Yanlord Riverside, you could commute by metro - just two stops away.. and more Indians there, for your wife ( I think there are some Mallus there, not sure.. I am not one, so cant help there). Rents range from 1500 to 2000 dollars, for 2 bedroom and more for three or four bedroom.
Availability of Indian groceries.. see this thread carefully, somewhere Bhoomi stores address is there.. most groceries you can get. You do get coconut in Carrefour... I am guessing you would want to know..
Rates ? I dont know the cost right now in India - but here is a sample
Toor dal, udad dal etc.. 1 kg is 18.5 yuan ( multiply by 5.5)
Atta 5 kg.. recently increased price is 55 yuan. Rice we buy only thai rice here, ( price ranging from 45 yuan to 65 yuan for 5 kg ..since indian rice(sometimes available, sometimes not) is as costly as basmati - basmati is 18 yuan a kg I think.. I dont use it so much.
Haldi rams aloo bhujia, etc : 15 yuan.. and so on.
Sorry I could not respond your pm, we are shifting our house tomorrow, and our net connection will be down.. I thought it is better to list here, once and for all.. it would be kind of guide to others too...
I will be free and hope to get net connectivity next week, so will post then.. |

Hi Lotta,
Thanks for your great response.
I used to help out some of Indians hopping into Bangkok with similar tips and I am now feeling very comfy to know that there are good samaritans in Shanghai also.
Such information will be very helpful indeed as I try to plan my budget and prepare for the relocation.
I am already a visitor to Shanghai many times but never looked at it from the point of view of living there.
And how did you read my mind about the "coconut"!!
(The mallu request was also to get such finer details....)
You are great!!
I hope to catch up with all of you soon(and the cooking lessons, in case the wife takes more time joining me here)
Meanwhile will keep in tocuh thru this forum (and also trouble you from time to time with specific queries) |
