| Post subject: Indian Expats |
There was never a 1.0 version, just trying to keep up with the Joneses. (SMS 2.0, etc.)
There has to be a big group of Indians in the town. It maybe fun to meet some time and talk about all the good things or the bad things (if any) about being here and maybe make some of the Indian restaurants a little richer in this process.
Time for a little intro..
I consider myself an Indian American having lived in US for a significant part of my life but as they say "Born an Indian, you can't get the curry/cricket in you away". In shanghai for the last 4 months and god & my boss only know how much longer (not that I'm complaining). I'm an exec in an IT MNC on an expat assignment. That should be enough to get this started and I'm sure we can get to know more over couple of cold ones.
Who's next? |

Hi, I am here for the past one and half year..
there are quite a number of Indians in the town.. around 600 or even more I think. There is an Indian association here, did you know that ?
www.indianassociation.com.cn.
We do have meets for holi and diwali, the ladies meet up once a month for coffee mornings..
there is another two or three who keep posting here, infrequently.. I think they will like to post anyway. I was also envying the SMS club and philipino thread..good to see you started one indian.

Good idea. It wouldn't be bad to get something started like a monthly drinks evening or something. THe Indian Association (as far as I know) only has something once in a while and there is not a regular get together, especially for the younger Indians here (i.e. not married and no kids).
Unfortunately, if you haven't discovered it yet, most of the Indian restaurants here suck and/or are really overpriced. I know I'm going to get flak from lots of board members for that last comment but I stick by it. |

I second that ! But I guess for someone who is used to Dollars may be its not a big deal, but with most of the better restaurants , the price we pay for a meal for two could feed a dozen or more back in India!
Yes, do get something like monthly gettogethers. |

I'm hoping we can get enough critical mass so that we can start meeting once a month or so for drinks and some fun. I agree that it may not fit with the reguar meetings that Indian association may have.

They seem to be on par pricewise with the western restaurants which I guess may make sense as they all are foreign food out here. Haven't had a chance to checkout any indian restaurants except Indian Kitchen. Can't complain. Zentral is getting most of my delivery money... |

You might get more attendance than the IA (indian association) that way, since there are more single people than families here, thats what I have been told. I know quite a few.
From the south ? Chennai - Bangalore - Andhra or Kerala ??
Lots of southies here too - But I guess if you have been to Indian kitchen you must have met some. |

Southie speaking hindi was the clue - hyderabadi(atleast partially)./Andhra I did spend a couple of high school years in chennai. Most of my Indian Kitchen has been delivery - not a big fan of eating dinner alone at a restaurant although I seem to have developed that skill now. So haven't had a chance to meet many Indians yet. |

I guess I mixed up. I was trying to refer to Star Wars instead.
Clearly shows I don't watch enough DVDs.
I was referring to "So speak telugu do you" as YODA does talk this way mixing up different parts of the sentence. |

I love Indian movies. Living in bayarea, I actually would go watch Indian movies in theater, we had a few of them screening in all languages. Too bad I can't get Indian Dvd's here. Although its not a traditional Indian movie, I want to watch "namesake" but can't find the dvd. Any of you seen it? Getting good reviews and oscar talk.. |

Distinkt.. where do you live ? if you live in Gubei, there is a shop in Ronghua Xi road which stocks odd flicks like Krish and Lage raho munna bhai, which I picked up for 9 rmb.. steal isnt it compared with bhoomi...
If you know Da gu road, near Masala art restaurant, my friend said she saw some..
The funniest thing is I picked up the best prints on the roadside vendors - kabul express , Krish, ( Asoka is very famous.. keep seeing it every where).. You should go through all the dvds the guy has, to spot.. need patience. sometimes, on recognizing us, they even take them out and show you.
Best of luck !
Of course, if you build a network, all you need to do is to start exchanging, which most families do here. |
