Post subject: Suggestions for nightlife?

Hi everyone,

I just stumbled upon this site while browsing the web for tips on traveling in Shanghai. I'll be traveling with a delegation from my university in May to China and will be in Shanghai May 22nd (Tues) - May 25th (Fri) and was hoping you guys would be able to give me some pointers as to the "hip and happenin'" places are. Our group age ranges from about 25-29 and are most interested in interesting bars/clubs, live music, late-night markets, anything "Shanghai" We'd like to avoid irish pubs and such b/c we can go to those anytime here at home.

Thank you!
Alice

go to the flashier clubs like attica and bon bon... not that i know much about the shanghai nightlife, but those are the places they usually talk about.
I don't think you'll need to know where some of the people of shexpat hang out as its usually a dark room up on tongren lu (not malone's)...

as for live music, i'd probably suggest 4Live, TangHui, or the Ark.. have not been to either in quite a while, I'd probably double check whether or not those bars are still playing good ear-splitting live music.
As for nightclubs, just to get the whole spectrum of Shanghai's 'scene', I'd probably say... Bar Rouge (for a champagne-drinking, house-music-loving, classy French crowd.. have you warn you though, most people tend to steer clear of the French arrogance at BR), BonBon (if you like to gan-bei/'chug' with high school students), Attica (China's most expensive club.. quite impressive though. right on the bund and expanded its empire to the restaurant industry as well...), Judy Q (recently redecorated as a laser-lit club in a smallish space with house/hip-hop/electro/oldies.. the hookers are easy to spot and easy to avoid), or Absolute House (...for absolute house music.)
