In Australia, 90% of hotwater comes from a storage tank. The water is hot ALL THE TIME. The disadvantage is that it is constantly heating up water, so gas/electric bills higher.

storage tank or boiler works as a buffer. it stores hot water ready to use (while it lasts). Here, max 50 liters, elsewhere up to 500 liters even more.

I have been living in Shanghai for more than a year now. I stumbled onto this site just now. Wondering what I have been doing all this time!

I was borned in Xian, and I immigrated to the US when I was in my early teens. When I first came back, I too was shocked by everything around me. But now I am used to it. I just follow a couple of rules: Never buy anything more than 1,000 yuan here; never see a doctor here. Besides that, as long as my safety is not in danger, I just take it easy. It is amazing once I changed my frame of mind.

Anyway, I am new to this site. I am looking forward in meeting some of you in the upcoming activities.

At the school I worked at the air conditioning was not working in the computer lab so the teacher turned it off, opened the windows, and called the schools's maintenance guys. When they arrived, they told the teacher that he had to turn it on. He told them that he turned it off because it wasn't working. They looked confused. Then they told him that it wasn't working because he had the windows open. So he told them that he opened the windows because the ac wasn't working. They were still confused. They argued with him for ten minutes about shutting the windows and making sure the ac was on. It was ridiculous.

one of my friend's friend is complaining that there is a bad smell in their bathroom, they called the maintenance people and said they cant smell anything, my friend's friend insisted that there is a smell and my friend can also prove it.....guess what the maintenance answered.... there is no problem in the bathroom, the problem is your nose. LOL!

My company setup JV with some local Chinese from (VERY) small town, who act more like mafia or burglar than normal human being. They spent company's money as the money comes from their ancestors' graveyard. Once they bought S500 new mercedes benz without permission, noone could believe it... my bosses kept telling me to go back and check the car's serial... later when the partners're being confronted, they simply said the car was bought to be used "together".

Money is money... not Chinese, it's just everywhere people's eyes would go green for it. In Australia or anywhere else when they ripped you off, they wouldnt say they're cheating on you... in fact, it's just your fault for being stupid...

First time I came to China, I freaked out for how cheap things were here and I got skinned off for buying all the fakes in high price. Now I dont buy anything fake or not fake... I only spent money on food. Now I live happily ever after...

Well Chinese rest would use pork lard to substitute oil and seasoning... it's just another way of sabotaging... so I choose to live on western food. It could be over priced as well, but I dont care about that. One way or another we learned to adjust for what we could tolerate and what we couldnt...

I've had a d*ckweed locksmith, who was recommended by my property management, charge me 150rmb for what apparently should cost 40rmb max. I told him I lived in Hainan and it only costs 20rmb down there. He said, "This is Shanghai, prices are higher here; 150rmb. No bargaining." I had to be restrained from kicking him in the nuts.

I've also had a "plumber" come to my house to fix a clogged toilet, and he didn't even bring a snake. Looking at the outside of the toilet, he decided that he was going to need to remove the entire toilet from the floor to fix it(so he could charge me an insane price afterwards of course). I proceeded to tell him to get the F*** out of my house.

About the wedding ring: I've learned from my female Shanghainese coworkers that apparently you ARE supposed to buy two rings. The diamond ring is only for show and maybe wearing a few times during engagement. Then, after the ceremony, you wear a plain silver or gold ring while the diamond ring is retired in the house. They really have F*ed up Western traditions haven't they?

We all feel your pain man.

no wonder..

also better be careful when you purchase jewelry here. Unless you're an expert, it's not suggested to go purchasing anything. My colleague told me they tried to swap her jewelry last time when she went to repair it... so be careful

He was actually telling the truth. Most of airconditioners installed in Shanghai are the kind which CAN NOT heat if outside temperature is bellow -5C. My dream is to have gas heating...

A repairman I had called to fix the latch on some sliding windows so that I could lock them, said that the problem was easy to fix. He got out a hammer & proceeded to nail the windows shut! When I said that I liked to be able to open the windows, he said that it wasn't necessary to be able to open windows & kept hammering!
The building management company where my office is located sent a "plumber" to make a "necessary" adjustment to our water intake valve "to avoid problems in future". That night I was called out at midnight as our office had flooded & water was cascading down into apartments on the floor below!
In two years here I have come to expect the unexpected and never to count on what I commonly call common sense being available in large quantities.
Sadly, I have also learnt to trust no-one completely with whom I have not built up some sort of connection or guanxi. This way of thinking allows me to be pleasantly surprised when a stranger proves helpful and trustwothy.
But for all the frustrations, I must admit I still enjoy living & working here, most of the time, & have met many wonderful locals.

I bought some glasses from the utterlky incompetent lying scumbags at IDEE . My prescription is about +5. My father is a Opthamologist where i worked for 2 years.

When i collected them was in a hurry so when i oput them on they were totally useless, the power was +0.5

Went back to complain, he then says, can i read the card with them, i say yes, he says then there is no problem, i point out that i can read it with no glasses too.

He then says they r "walking " glasses not normal glasses.......
He then says my chinese is not fluent enough, finally after all his other lies are exposd he says its chinese policy to give lenses thast r much too weak................

NEVER BUY FROM IDEE OPTICIANS. This sort of total incompetent spineless lying turds are so so common here

Do i even need to mention the thieving lowlife landlords.

These people are definately the lowest, most dispicable ive ever encountered. And in my experience they r the rule not the exception here.

Having carefully read all your comments, and compared them with my own experiences, I think we can safely make the following statement with a high degree of certainty:

"99.9% of all electricians who are also plumbers who are also handy'men' are retards"

Agree with Mat, I find the same thing.

Advantage of starage tank = higher bill for maintaining a reserve of hot water for more instant access to hot water, though in Wnter, its usually the pipes that cool the heated water back down so essentially it does not matter whichh system you have. A well adjusted instant-on system sized for teh right flow should provide more than adaquate hot water. i can run my hot shower for an hour no problem. Smile

Before Obi was taken over by B&Q I went to the branch in Pudong to buy a pump for the fishpond in our garden.

I bought an expensive German model, stupudily I did not ask them to test it there and then. Took it home and put it in the pond, not a squirt. Rang them up and they told me I had bought a demo unit which did not work. I aasked them why they sold me that one. 'Well you wanted that model and we had no stock aprt from the non working demo one' was the answer.

They refused to do anything about it. So the following day I finally managed to track down one of their German managers. He could not believe it. 'This is not possible'

He called me back an hour later saying he had just learnt a new lesson in China. After a week they finally delivered the new pump.

Never ever take anything on trust here when buying goods.

Yes, you have to test everything in the store before you pay, otherwise you are stuck with it. Heck, it's even bank policy that they will only replace a conterfeit banknote if you tell them before you leave the bank.

On the service side, when we first got here we rented a high-end apartment. Once we moved in, we noticed that the bathrooms always smelled like sewage. We discovered that there were no traps on the sink drains (you know, those u-turns in the drain pipe that traps water and blocks smells from coming up). We asked for the maintenance guys to fix it, they said just run the tap for a while each day to get the smell out. After an hour of arguing, they agreed to fix it the following week. It took two trips, 3 hours of work, and another hour of arguing to get it done...total cost was RMB30. What a joke.

Our next place has gas water heaters for radiators. When they were turned on for the winter they were leaking carbon monoxide into the house. The maintenance guys came out, adjusted them, but didn't fix it. The next day they suggested opening the windows (in the middle of the winter) as a solution. We got action by informing the landlord that we were moving to a hotel that night, and would take the hotel bill off the rent until it was fixed.
