Deppy, you ship over or hand carry? Gee that's a lot of things to bring over, if MILO and coffee're included as well!

Grizzlybear, looking forward to it! Where can we start searching for these? I am zero-beginner level hor.

i'm not sure as i haven't started looking for it. however, for many things here, i normally find either via word of mouth or http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/

we can look out for the class more conscientiously when the time is nearer. Smile

allegro: Yeah, bring your own coffee where possible. I bring my own also from Singapore. Well, not for my hubby and I as we're not coffee drinkers but we have friends over and they always crave for coffee whenever they are here.

So, to make them feel at home, we always have some 'singapore coffee'. I haven't tasted Milo here yet but I would like to believe what deppy says.

Milo here tastes awful. Should definitely buy from Singapore. Same for coffee.

I'm interested to take up dance classes but I stay in Pudong.

Hello Allegro...

wahhahaha...so cute to read about "new arrivals"....dun worry la...if in a fix, someone will sure have something you need here. Share and enjoy is tonnes more fun! And many people make home trips very frequently (...*cough* cough*...like *cough*....cacky) and should be able to help elevate your "wilderness" Most of us are hoarders ! My home is a NTUC, Cold Storage and Jasons all in one....you wouldn't believe the extent of nonsense we hoard.

I wouldn't stock up too much on Kaya as you'll find that it turns bad too fast...unless you intend to eat it in mass quantities. My husband used to lugg 2 pints back each trip and was so "insecure" that he wouldn't share with his friends, even though I constantly nag him. Till it turns bad with mould. The alternative would be to freeze it so that it keeps longer. Its not too bad to make, though its been years since I've done so ..not a super Kaya lover myself (fattening leh!) so must wait till got time then can rediscover the recipe etc.

We used to bring Milo over as well..just a word of "caution" though...bring those sachet type as the 1kg bag type can harden when kept too long. At least sachet types don't have this problem. You can get 3-in-1 coffee here from Pines supermarket but its just more expensive la. Pines website is : http://www.chiro.com.cn/

I would say since you have 2 younger children, your priority may be to stock up on meds from your SG PD, make sure you get his/her emergency contact numbers and a record of your children's medical record if necessary. Food tends to be a secondary concern when kids come in the picture. English books (if your kids read) is also hard to come by, so you may also want to stock up (I do!) Otherwise, the Julia Gabriel here has a great library with a lovely selection for the kids.

Oh yes, and school shoes seem to be somewhat of a challenge here...so you may want to sort it out from home. At least that's what some moms have been telling me. Let me know if I can SHARE anything else.

Mjoelle/Allergro, what genre of dance are you ladies interested in? Its been years since I've laced up those shoes and my figure doesn't really help things now. LOL. www.jazzdufunk.com seems popular.

Thanks ladies, great tips!

Need quick advice.... Am tackling the kitchen right now and can anyone give me some tips on what to bring / definitely leave behind?

As the shipment will be kinda late, what are the essentials to hand carry huh? Or buy all there?

Shd I bring my own utensils / plates / frying work??

And LAST, do u bring any appliances from singapore? What electric appliances can I bring over without electrocuting myself or short-circuiting the whole apartment ???? Am wondering what to do with that gleaming deep fryer i bought 2 months ago.....

allegro: I suppose if you already have your own utensils, it's best to bring them over instead of buying them over here. Gonna be a waste of money, I suppose. And from what I've observed, there doesn't seem to be any decently good frying wok here, unless you are gonna be spending hundreds of dollars on one.

Hhahaa, maybe vandrew can give you some good tips as she's recently moved over.

allegro,
i feel tat i'm not a good person to answer the questions cos we didnt move from sg... and well, we moved from a little 'kampong' so was definately glad to see familar brands/products here Smile

electrical appliance i do find tat they have a good range here, but usually assembled locally. we've bought a humidifer last weekend n 2 days ago a rice cooker Smile if u wish to bring from sg, do bring along some travel adapters as the power plug is different, unless the appliances r using 2-pins socket.

medication- i doubt the doctor will prescribe antibiotics as 'standby medication'. usually i'll drop by our family GP and get him to issue a list of watever medication he feels its necessary. for our 3.5YO, cough, phelgm, runny nose, fever n pain, diarrhea. for ourselves given, panadol, gastric tablets, charcoal, runny nose, cough - tats wat i can think of at the moment.

the only few extras i ta bao from sg during my transit there was: ru yi oil, marmite, diaper rash cream (for our arriving baby) and gripe water.

generally IMO, if u are keeping your apt in sg, do leave a set there for your hometrip. otherwise just get the packers to pack up everything and dump the unwanted when u arrive - tats wat we're doing at our last min move Razz

cacky, good thing u mentioned the wok, I was just telling hubby I'm SURE we can find it in SH, I mean we're in Asia! Now I better bring my own kuali.... Funny thing, though we're all asians, some things are just so alien in Shanghai, eg bolsters, round-bottom woks?

I got most of the kids' stuff already, yup the quintessential Ruyi oil is a staple for s'porean / malaysian babies.

vandrew, u have a baby on the way? when are you due? Our aptm will be rented out, so our home trips will be.... spent camping at my bro's I guess.

allegro: Ha, they do have bolsters here. They sell it at Ikea. We bought ours from there.

As for round-bottom woks, they do have, just that I'm pretty doubtful of the quality. I mean, if you have a really good one back home, why not just bring it over, that's how I feel lah. I know what you mean ... when I moved to Beijing, I also thought like you ... sure can find things there that we have back in Singapore.

Then I realized how wrong I was. Coz' in terms of food, Beijing's considered more of 东北 kinda cuisine, so there were quite a number of foodstuff I couldn't really find. I simply took for granted as a lot of things we have back in Singapore are actually imported from Malaysia instead of China.

Something as simple as those canned button mushrooms, I had such a hard time finding them. Even in Shanghai, so far I can only find them in Parksons or Pines. The regular supermarkets don't seem to have them! But it all comes with experience lah.

And like meepok said, the fun is in sharing what we have, eh?

When I first moved over, I maximised my shipping since it was paid for by my husband's company. I literally stocked my shipment with lots of food stuff (including Milo) that I heard would be hard to find here. And of course medication (the usual cough medicine, diarrhoea pills, cold tablets, etc) and vitamins. We are too paranoid to buy any in China since there's so much bad press about tainted/fake products.

Subsequently, I always lug back more supplies whenever I go back. Another great source are friends or families visiting. Since we provide the free accommodation, they provide their "labour" to help us bring over supplies. Laughing

Allegro, I guess what to bring along or leave behind depends on who's footing the bills Razz Woks can find la..there is a shop downtown on Ou Men Lu that caters to hotels and you'll find loads of lovely stuff there (if you are as ah soh like me who gets excited about Lock Lock storage systems!) and they have good woks there. For the record, good woks are expensive even in Singapore, if you know what I mean.

If you bake, I will say bring your baking stuff over and bring your own oven if you can't live without one. We can't ... so we brought our own over. I think it also depends on how willing your family is to adapt to things as Dorothy also said: I guess we are not in Kansas anymore....Smile But that being said, we are very blessed to be in Shanghai where things are so much more accessible than other places.

We used to bring our own bolster covers until we discovered Qing Fang Shi Chang, where you can get beddings tailor made according to your requirements on the spot.

Like what Deppy says, barter trade la Razz

As for meds, we don't stock up antibiotics but we do have a host of cold cough and inhalers as you'll notice many sg/msian kids strugging with respiratory sensitivities etc. Def. stock up on mossie patches, kiddy sun block, pedialyte (though can always yell if you need some!), special creams etc. We bring our own FM too as the local mixture tends to be too high in sugar for my comfort. I would love to have been able to ship diapers as the quality here is not as good and its more expensive. One pee and 1 piece of diaper gone! In SG, 2-3 pees still can tahan.

Vandrew, you can quite easily get adapters from Carrefour. One expat mom shared that she would tape the adapters to the plugs , 1 each, so that the ayi wouldn't accidentally blow the appliances up.

What else ah...hmmm...oh yes, ironing board covers. Silly right? But we can't find any here that is not overpriced. Razz I also head to the Watsons and stock up on lozenges .. like 6 packs each time.

Appliances are not that costly here given that most things are made in China unless you really want something made overseas la. I would also get 1-2 Tiger thermal flasks as they are so much cheaper in SG. The local thermal flasks don't hold heat as well as the Tiger ones do so with a kid, its not as effective.

Cannot think of much more but don't worry...its not a "no U-turn" trip ma Razz

meepok: Hhahaha, I totally agree with you on iron board covers. I am surprised I couldn't find a decently priced one here! My mom thought I was crazy to buy iron board covers from Singapore to back here.

meepok,
yeah we bought couple of adapters here n there, quite easy to get. i tot allegro may need to use some appliances upon arrival b4 she can do any shopping Smile

eh wat do u mean by blow the appliances up? the expat mum is from US? the power voltage here is the same as sg right? i mean how to plug in when the head itself doesnt fit into the powerpt??? anyway those adapters r making our powerpt looks ugly Sad

oh, so iron board cover is better to get from sg??? my ayi requested us to get a normal iron n ironing board instead of using our current standing steam iron... my hb said tat may be returning sg for a week or so end Aug. can start a list for him Very Happy

Allegro,
bb's EDD in early Nov Smile

since u'll be renting out your apt, good to leave behind only what you intend to leave for the leasee / those that u have no intention of getting back in good condition, unless your relatives/friends dont mind to store them for u. even if rent out the apt with 1 room locked with your stuff, no point keeping them in sg to become white elephant and u can save some money getting new ones from here. then again, like meepok mentioned, depending on who's footing the shipment/insurance/taxes bills Smile

I have compromised with whatever I can find here in Shanghai... I haven't been using a bolster since I arrived and have got used to it. Only thing is I still miss the spicy food once awhile and the curry we get from the restaurants here is very different. Either not spicy enough or too much coconut milk. Sad

allegro - Shld stock up more on cough mixtures for children as it is not easy to find them here. I bring my kid to the doctor at Worldlink and the cough mixtures prescribed are produced locally and not very effective. We are used to buying all the medicines off the shelf at the pharmacy but it isn't the case here. Shld do the same for flu medicine.

Besides stocking up on the medicine, I normally ask my visitors to bring dried prawns, assam skin, belachan and other dried goods for cooking as I can't find them here. Dried prawns is available but quality not as good as ours.

cacky - Are you attending the NDP party?
