What, whoever name themselves Candy are all pornstars? How about the late John Candy? Boy, I wouldn't watch him get naked in a million years! Sorry John, wherever you are, rest in peace!
Some people take the name Candy to sound sweet, but Candice or Candide can also be shortened as Candy. Chinese people can't possibly know the negative connotations associated with the names. |

hahaha...
Well, it's just a name. They choose a name that represent themselves.
Try to get a Chinese name ourselves, we might choose something that sounds weird to them too.
Chill Candy, I got 2 friends named Candy as well. They're sweet too...
Best wishes in learning some popular language of the world.
(what about tagalog, hehe!) |

I agree with ash. It's a cultural thing. Girl is looking for some help with the language and see helpful folks have been here. I don't think anyone of us here would enjoy being laughed at when we go pick a chinese name that mean something weird in this culture...or do we? |

with guys around here calling themselves Tiger, Final or Sky, I am not surprised by all the girls named Angel, Candy etc
They just choose on basis of different thoughts, image etc is less of an issue then back home for most of us... |

I agree, however many of us are given or have picked the chinese name just to make the communications a bit easier (born from pronounciation etc.).
When it comes to the bearer of the name, I thinkfor example Lucy is equally good name whether its bearer is chinese or caucasian... |

i knew quite a few ladies named candy and candice in the u.s., so i don't think it's so strange to see it here.
i find these far more entertaining:
chanel
jojo
coco
lemon
dark fish
rice
i personally prefer the more creative names than brad, susan, john and laura. but, it does make one wonder how it would go over in a job interview or a formal business meeting...
and what's wrong with the word oral? this is very common to say. an 'oral presentation' an 'oral exam' and 'oral skills' are fairly common in education/academia even in the u.s. plus, it makes the immature people laugh, so all good. |

The thing is that most Chinese have no clue what English names are proper to pick. One of my friends names herself "Candy baby" and believe me she is not 16. |

I find it interesting that people query use of the word "Oral" and query if it is a British thing. Let us remember that the language we are using is English. Not American, Australian or Canadian or anything else. "Oral" is used widely in many parts of the English speaking world to refer to exams etc (as noted above) and also in other contexts. For example, "the witness in the court case provided oral evidence as opposed to written evidence". The words "spoken" or "verbal" would both be inappropriate in such a context.
Well done Candy your use of the word "oral" was perfectly correct. Yu888 you cannot use (well I guess you could but you shouldn't) the word "verbal" in the context of Candy's sentence.
Candy I am happy to help out with your English. |
