ORAL
adj.
Spoken rather than written. See Usage Note at verbal.
Of or relating to the mouth: oral surgery.
Used in or taken through the mouth: an oral thermometer; an oral vaccine.
Consisting of or using speech: oral instruction.
Linguistics. Articulated through the mouth only, with the nasal passages closed
n.
An academic examination in which questions and answers are spoken rather than written. Often used in the plural.
[Late Latin ōrālis, from Latin ōs, ōr-, mouth.]
May be it is british.. oral = spoken.. ofcourse many members here seem to think otherwise.. |

Come on, guys! Cut this poor girl some break! She obviously has no clue what the word implies. It's probably a British thing. I get a chuckle every time I hear the school kids mentioning their "rubber".
Where are our British allies? Anything vice versa on your side of the pond? Let's be fair and share! |

It seems to have been added in the English vocabulary somewhere early 17th century. The word itself is of Latin origin and used in both sides of the Atlantic referring to for example spoken examinations or mouth health.
Language learning professionals and academics tend to use this word.
American Heritage -dictionary recognizes the word. |

actually I knew a very cute little girl, about 2-years old named Candy, I think it was spelt differently, but that was the name. And her parents were expats. I've also met quite a few Chinese girls named Candy, completely ignorant of any negative connectations to the name. I think they make direct translations, as in Candy=sweet, just like girls get nicknames or are named flower, beautiful etc.
In South Africa we speak of orals in school when referring to a speech that one must present to the rest of the class. |

Dear Candy, don't feel offended by anything mentioned above; your name is fine and wannabe chicks like Sienna who bring up 'pornstar' connections should be first aware of their very empty headed blog contributions, before coming up with comments like this. Probably the language exchange section gives you a bigger chance of finding what you are looking for. Good luck ! |
