It used to be quite a serious channel.
In the past mth, i shite you not, Larry King done 2 full weeks on Anna Nicole Smith. Bugger off!!!
Today, the "Question of the day" was What do people think about Prince William splitting with his piece of fluff. The English hosts were generally shocked when they were reading out the responses from people from Brazil, USA, Australia etc.. that basically said "do i look like i give a shite"
Downhill bigtime. I would watch BBC but they have funny accents, and CNN has some seriously hot chicks. |

I would watch BBC but it's not available where I live, and the news website is blocked.
Odd, that. |

Why anyone would want to watch any form of British news media is beyond my scope of reason.
CNN took a big turn for the worse when Ted Turner was ousted back in 2000 or so. I thought it was rebounding this year and they have some excellent multimedia on their site. But by the sounds of what Mat is saying it is getting pretty bad.
I guess that is to be expected when they hired that british idiot to help them do the news. |

CNN peaked during Gulf War I, and went downhill from there.
If looking for news babes, then it's Foxnews, fairly nice on the eyes and balanced proportions. |

Also - y'day they had a story on the latest trends & gadgets from Japan, which was shown ad-nauseum. The stroy ended up with Kristie Lu Stout dancing and prancing around like a fcuking idiot to a music video creator. We want more Richard Quest... |

I find Richard Quest an annoying prat.
Larry King should be euthanised.
Kristie is quite sexy.....
At least CNN has improved on its weather. I remember a few years ago they had a weather map of China which just said 'windy' over Mongolia.... |

Is that because Britain has the most unbiased and comprehensive news media in the world? You stick to CNN and FOX News CLM and continue to live in isolated ignorance absorbing Murdoch-owned, dumbed-down mass-market pig swill - how very North American of you. |

Fox News, after gulf war 2 started up, were showing war prοtesters & commenting on the amount of neo-nazis & communists that were converging in New York. Funny too, since I always thought Nazis & Communists hated each other. |

No, its because it is the most sensationalised, biased, uninformed, single minded crap ever produced. The science shows on BBC are boring and uninformed (at times), they are pale copies of science shows from other countries. The newspapers are pathetic, complete tabloid rags with single directions and a complete failure to look at anything outside their own self serving British complexion. |

The chip on your shoulder is preventing you from seeing the bigger picture here. If you think British news media is all tabloid rags and kids science programmes then you’ve been living under a rock for all of your international life – a very low class rock at that.
The massive intellect gap between British and American news media is none more apparent than in Prospect magazine. Just have a look at the difference between UK Prospect and American prospect –and you’ll see what I mean.
www.prospect-magazine.co.uk/
www.prospect.org/
On the other hand CLM, perhaps it’s better if you stick with high-brow publications like Esquire… |

Because i dont agree with your opinion I have a chip on your shoulder, hmmmmm, well maybe i do, because 99.9% of what I have seen, read, experienced from the British media has been sensationalised drivel. But that is not the problem, the problem is how they pretend that is it not. I dont think you understand the American media experience and I not trying to convince you that it is better. It doesnt matter to me and blindly following one form of media is not how I get my news, if you do, good for you.
Esquire is a great magazine. I have Esquire on my toilet and love reading it while taking a sh1t. They have some great writers and excellent guest writers. Granted too much crap at times about clothing or the babe of the week. I also usually have the Economist beside the bog, which I also enjoy reading.

Yah, really stupid comment on a whole, but keep believing it if you want. The first article I clicked on from Prospect is this the following
| Quote: |
Writers are people who have been sidelined by life. I get my revenge in my novels—by handing out hideous fates to those who have offended me. And I usually get away with it
Hilary Mantel
I once set fire to a nun. She had been annoying me since I was ten years old by looking like a horse, and a horse of bad character too: by having long yellow teeth, by being dull and crass and often violent. I'd waited 30-odd years to deal with her, and so when it came it wasn't a small blaze. Seemingly an instance of spontaneous combustion, it didn't kill her, but it put her in hospital and caused a lot of gossip in the parish.
I didn't get the blame, for I was nowhere near the scene. She was one of the characters in my novel Fludd. Mother Perpetua was her name in the novel, but the real-life original was called Mother Malachy. By now she'll be good and dead, but if she has any relatives out there, I'm not apologising. She was a bully and I arranged what she deserved: a tiny foretaste of hell.
Norman Mailer was quoted as saying recently: "No one understands that writers have personalities quite as ugly as the ugliest athlete." I think that's understating it. Athletes don't brood on their tormentors and savour their grievances, and hand out ingenious, long-delayed, personalised and painful fates. I know that writers of the Mailer tough-guy tendency feel undermined by... |
So she is quoting an American author, big surprise there, and the rest looks like crap. Then it asks me to pay 18GBP to read further.
No Thanks. |

The BBC isn't bad really (BBC World is a poor reflection). It's still pretty respected in much of the World. Also the serious British newspapers are OK.
The tabloids are another matter. No proper news reporting at all. Sensationalist for the sake of it and building up wannabe celebrities with no talent and then knocking them down again. Its actually the tabloids that hold the power in the UK. The government tends to legislate based on whatever campaign the tabloid editors have decided on the previous week.. |

Have to agree, Radio 4 is excellent both for the news and the comedy. |

Yah, i know, its a great magazine and set the standard in a lot of ways for this type of reporting.
Another great magazine, or used to be, I am finding it a bit boring lately, is www.strategy-business.com/
I will check out Radio 4 and have a listen. The topics they have on the website look pretty good. Canada's CBC radio has a much similar format. CBC is the state owned radio station set up by the gov't in the 70s. It mandate is basically to give a more balanced view on news for Canadians, so that we arent completely bombarded with American media. It has always been held in high regard, not sure if the BBC modelled itself after them or the otherway around. |

Yes, tabloids are out of control there. As well i find the sports reporting to be really biased, but i guess that can be said for any country....except maybe Canada because they are so lame at World and Olympic sports that they have no choice but to report all the interesting stories from other places around the world. Which actually makes for great news watching.
The biggest problem i find with media in general is they just dont write real stories. Not indepth coverage, just quick headline and shock value.
I actually really enjoy that about living in China is you can reach out and select your news coverage, its not like everything is blasting down your down here and demanding your attention. You can focus on the things you want. |

C'mon Moderator! How is it that he can get away with spouting such racist crap on this forum? 99.9%? Talk about wild generalisations!
I'm offended and upset.
So there CLM! |
