everybody interested email to
holeinoneshanghai@mac.com
send your telephone number and what time you're available on sunday, also where you live, so we can come up with a convenient meeting point and go together or decide to meet there.
I'll try to recruit some foxes that can play beer-caddies |

Hi there - I am 1 month into a 2 year assignment... I expect my shipment (and clubs) to show up soon.
I am looking for a place to learn about the different options for golf around Shanghai - including pricing.
Anybody know a resource I can tap into? |

^ Sadly the Society never got going due to people going away in the summer, and now work commitments.
Check this thread for courses around Shanghai, further info on green fees etc should be found on their websites.

You sound like a good player, however you could have picked up a good set of fakes here quite cheaply, instead of shipping your clubs over. |

yeah, some people told me i could just get knock offs here, but since i was not paying for the shipment of stuff over here, or back, seemed like i should have the $ for the outrageous green's fees |

^ At a 10 handicap, Use your own.
You will notice a difference between the knocks and real.
For me...bout 30 yards on the woods, 15 on the irons.
I "miss much better" with the real ones. The copies are not near as forgiving. |

For someone about 193 cm that doesn't have time or the convenience to play near a major US city yet needs to buy new clubs anyway, what's the likelihood of finding clubs long enough in Shanghai? Or, should I buy new clubs here and have 'em shipped over? Regarding the latter, I'm not THAT good yet I doubt I can wondering about finding clubs long enough or the likelihood of having custom clubs made in Shanghai. Maybe I can get custom clubs made while in HK or SF for business? Thanks for some local insightful info. |

^^ Been travelling my butt off the last month. Let's try for after the holiday?
^ You can "have custom fakes" made up in about a week or less.
Do not expect an expert fitting though. Best to get a fitting at a US shop.
Figure out exactly what shaft length you want. And give it to the gang here.
Mind you....getting a custom "lie" head might be tricky...Like a Ping Fitting.
What you will probably end up with is a standard lie head...with a longer shaft |

bumping this thread.
since it's colder outside, is there any indoor driving ranges? (I'm not talking simulators)
What I've understood both the one on Lujiazui and the one on JianGuo is outdoor. |

the real heads and the fake heads are almost all cast(almost none are forged anymore) so there really isn't much off a difference in the real or knock offs. What makes the difference are the shafts. It can make a huge difference.
as far as distance is concerned. You can have your shafts "Tipped" that will add some distance, and also if you tip your shafts and add 3/4 to 1 1/2 inches in length to the shafts you will add distance to all your irons. You can juice up your clubs pretty good.
I recently bought new pings ( real ones) then I sent them to a clubmaker in Memphis and he put really hot shafts in all the irons. I love it. however I could send him knockoff ping heads and he can put the same shafts in them and they will perform just like the real pings.
Forged Irons are a different story. I would not buy forged knock offs. those heads will not perform like real ones. |

there's really no such thing as a ping Fitting. They have four standard colored heads. What it means is how upright the hosel . they measure your finger tips to the ground and then have a chart. Most time the taller you are the more upright your clubs will be. The weight and balance is standard in all their heads. The colors are for the angle on the hosel. Most clubs are the same length. You can add 3/4 to 1/3/4 to the standard length to add some distance. |

I'll give you that shafts make a huge difference....
"Fake" heads versus "real"....Big Difference.
Yes both cast, but the materials and machining can be very different.
The grooves on my fakes are nowhere near legal....nice and sharp. Which is great for stopping a chip, but hairs up a golf ball like you would'nt believe.
Had a set of high end fake TaoylorMades down in Thailand for a little over 2 years now..and several are starting to rust....
But....for a couple of hundred bucks....you get what you pay for. |

I have a friend with copper pings. He soaks them in CocaCola to clean.
I'm a little surprised you heads are rusting. When I was a kid I played with forged steel that were crome plated, and they would flake or chip and then rust |

i know but most US companies have their cast heads made in China.
For example Ping pays $2.50 for a putter head, the shaft for their putter is less then $3.00 and the Grip is about $2.00 There putters retail for about $65.00
I was Chairman of a small public company that made high end custom golf clubs. Our cast head were from China. Forged heads from Mississippi, and the Shafts were hand made by a fishing pole company that Loomis used to work for before he was Loomis.
I don't know that much about club making but we had some people who were pretty good at it. |
