Post subject: Shanghai Zoo

Hi everyone - I have two nephews (ages 6 & 3) coming to visit and they are excited about being able to see pandas whilst here. I am not a big fan of zoos as I am always disappointed by how the animals are kept - has anyone been to the one in Shanghai? Would you recommend a visit or not?

Many thanks

Hi, Shanghai Zoo is in Changning district, just take the metro live 2 to Zhongshan Park and then grab a taxi from there.

Or you can go to Wildlife Animal Park, more fun. Because you go in a safari bus watching lions, tigers, etc.

I've been. it is actually ok, but the panda (Note the singular) is a little dissapointing. a little dirty as well, but interesting to see one.

thanks for your replies - apart from the panda being a little dirty, does it look well treated (ish)/have a decent amount of space (it isn't kept in a cage is it?).......trying to gauge if their first sight of a panda might be a bit sad. Last time I visited a zoo in China, I vowed never again.

Yes, it is in an enclosure, but as mat said it is dirty.. when we saw our first Panda in Hong Kong - Ocean park I think it was.. it was really good, the pandas looked happy and clean... the panda looks a bit dirty by comparison.. but other wise I think it does have some space.. the enclosure is not too small for it or anything.

Please don't go to the zoo....... The only animals that aren't harassed to the point of insanity are the ones in cement enclosures with dirty glass windows. People throw candy to the monkeys, throw maps and water at the large cats, and there's a part of the zoo where they keep purebred dogs and cats in small enclosures..... It's not really something I want to support.

Flopsy, you may want to give the Wildlife Animal Park special consideration with children that age. Riders on the bus will have the option to purchase live chickens to dangle outside bus windows. The chickens are tethered to a pole and attached to their broken wing. Everytime bus rolls through, lunch time. The cats will bang the bus and some anglers will tease the cats, prolonging the whole ordeal. Obviously the chicken doesn't have a chance. Certainly exposing children to nature via TV/Video on what happens in nature is one thing, but this may be a little intense to experience live for children that age.

As far as I'm aware the live chicken thing at the Wildlife Park doesn't happen any more. Certainly the times I've been there I've never seen it, or given the option to do it, neither have my friends and we have all been on many occasions.

The Wildlife Park is better than the zoo, but if you are comparing to zoos in say Europe or American you will be disappointed. The animals seem to be healthy enough but their cages are sadly lacking in space and stimulation. The bus trip round the bears/lions etc lasts about 20 mins, then you can walk round the rest of the park. They have several pandas there and they seem to be happy enough.

Don't watch the animal show though as its like something from the dark ages, and I think very cruel. Also you will see keepers with animals tethered so that you can take pictures with them - the most bizarre was children being allowed to sit on the back of a lion to have their picture taken and there is a very sad looking monkey and bear as well which are made to 'perform' for spectators.

i went to the zoo about 18 months ago and my advice would be do not go to the zoo it is truly sad
with concrete enclosures and with fat overfeed (by public) animals who just
hang out on the bars waiting for food. The panda i saw was in a room 10m x 10m sitting in the corner with its back to everyone.
you nephews will just get the wrong impression if they have been to any other zoo.

Hi,

My nephew is also coming over and I'm thinkg of bringing him to the wildlife park. Can I just check if it's packed(I watched in TV once that there's a long queue, not sure if it's always the case) and if it's easy to get a cab home from there?

I've been to the zoo last year, probaby i went at the wrong time, the animals were all sleeping. The panda was a disappointment.

It depends when you go. We go during the week and its normally quiet, we dont have to queue for the safari buses at all. If you go during holiday weeks or the weekends obviously it will be busier. I guess the answer is to get their early and do the safari bus first.

There is normally a queue of cabs outside, but you will need to negotiate your fare.

THEY SMELL, THEY ARE LOUD, AND THEY TREAT THE FACILITIES LIKE CRAP, no I am not talking about the animals but the behaviour of some of the visitors. I went about a month back and was impressed by the park areas but the animals are living in boxes which are filthy and the amount of people pushing to have a look made me give up half the time. But the most unbelieveable sight was at the chimp islands where the locals threw everything at the chimps including a cup of pearl milk tea and a glass bottle of beer. I was also surprised to see NO keepers anywhere in sight. If you do go, make it a weekday and try not to lose your rag with all the idiots you will see.

the aquarium is much better than the zoo (and the water tanks seems to be larger than the cages in the zoo - and also cleaner). If you like to go to the aquarium I would recommend the one in Pudong.

LMFAO

As per other peoples reasons i would avoid the zoo, the exploitation and conditions the animals are kept in is quite sad.

I was upset by going there. The animals look in very sad conditions. My dauther who is 19 months enjoyed it. Most of the animals where sleeping. The panda is very disapointing, I heard so many things about China and the pandas that was very exited to so see them but was dirty, in a very small area and looked unhappy. How can we get to the Wild animal place? Is there a metro by? thanks

animals should be freed, not inside the cage.

The Zoo wasn't as bad as I expected it to be... some of the areas were quite nice and the animals had room but some of them are in a cage and that is sad. The worst part were the people who were throwing all kinds of things like juice cartons into the enclosures to try to get the animals closer...
About the one Panda, it was a very dissapointing experience... I would not recommend making that your main reason to go to the Zoo. I was there about 2 weeks ago and it was extremely bad... It was difficult to tell that it was a Panda. I'm going to try to post some pictures but as my experience is limited have patience...

Check out the aquariums. The one in Hongqiao is better than the one in Pudong, but you can't go wrrong either way. Also make sure you take the kids to the Science and Technology Museum
