Post subject: Suggestions on where to bring the kids this summer holidays

Hi there,

The summer holidays are approaching, can anyone give me some suggestions on where to bring the kids? I'm looking at Jin Jiang park, wild animal park, science museum, dino park, underwater world. Any comments on these plcs?

Yes, I would also like some suggestions.. I was also thinking about this : if all the Shanghai Expat Moms with kids who are going to stay in Shanghai during the summer holidays plan something - not necessarily only out door trips - it will get pretty hot soon ! If moms could join together, form a group and have a kind of summer camp thing ( I found that Active kidz summer camp and others a bit expensive for me) - meaning moms can pool up resources, teach kids arts and crafts, simple cooking... what ever keeps the kids occupied, without burning a hole in the pocket.
Any one interested in this ?

Hmmm.....too bad I'm a Daddy Expat. Maybe I should gather those daddies together, let the moms brings the kids go places. Form a Moms+Kids Club and also Daddy's Club. Smile

Well, since the weather will get hot soon, Dino Park would be good. Lotta gave a good suggestion, summer camp with some activities. Where should we head for those activities, any idea?

Hey Ash.. thats a good idea ! I guess it was my mindset that mommies only take kids out for summer while dads work.. Of course if any dads who are willing want to join, it would be really nice.
Where we should head for these activities ? It will depend on number of kids, wouldnt it ? if small number, we can alternate taking them to one another's homes - one day each kids' home, while the parents who can teach something like crafts games etc can teach.. if anyone has access to a playground then too it would be fine. we could make groups of people living near by... so kids dont have to travel far in the heat. Smile

1. Science museum annual pass - got 13 months on mine....at 2.5 times cost of 1 entry. If you are planning to go back often, do only 1-3 exhibits each time. Then you will get 3 visits before you repeat and you are not overly tired. Set example early on...do NOT go to the IMAX movies/LEGO movies....they'll expect it every time. We've never gone (been to other museums for IMAX) to the movies...ergo, they never ask/pester me. They have some neat souvenirs/semi-educational toys and not expensive.
2. Ice skating
3. Silport week long golf camp (very resaonble for golf) for 6-12 yr.
4. Driving range
5. Get some rollerbaldes and skate in one of the compounds.
6. Insect museum...bring fish food. Have turtles too.
7. Go to an SCAA sponsored event...your kids can pet as many (healthy) kittens/dogs as their hearts desire. usually at O'Malleys (fin playground for under 6s).
8. http://www.activekidz.org/aks/index.asp , http://www.sportforlife.com.cn for sport or summer camp
9. SMIC has reasonable price summer school to learn chinese or english.
10. Hit one of the compound playground. I find Tomson Golf to be really good...and has a small City shop across from playground for slightly overpriced drinks, ice cream, snacks. Also has basketball courts and a small patch of grass (after entering, head towards the driving range). The restaurant in the driving range is reasonably priced. If you have car, can bring bikes and ride around their compound.
11. Go to the Foreign Language Bookstore 4th floor/Fuzhou Rd...all the english books your kids can read....and for pete sake - make your kids put the books away or they might actually be vigilant about people browsing (never seen anyone in there and their selection of book rival any small town book shop/library).

This sounds like taking kids to the mall in the US to burn an hour or two, especially on a hot summer day - very funny!

1. Dino Beach: just went there and I heart it. reminds me of home, and a lot cleaner than I had expected thank god. your kids don't pee in the water do they? cuz that kind of ruins it for everyone else. =P (80-150 rmb, depending on what day you go and whether you're there for the whole day or after 4pm)

2. Jinjiang Amusement Park: sad, just sad. It reminds me of the fair they set up in the parking lot of the K-Mart where i was growing up. (i think 40-80 rmb, and several valuable hours of your life... though if you have really small kids under 10, they might like it... little dirty though.)

3. Yinqixing Indoor Skiing: never been but seems decent enough. nice, safe bunny slopes. (up to 200-ish rmb for unlimited, around 100rmb hourly rate)

I agree with Science and Technology museum though I know little about it... and don't refuse to take your kids to the IMAX... that's just mean.

Where is the insect museum? I used to teach at a kindergarten and I found that Aquaria 21 out in Hongqiao is nicer than the aquarium in Pudong.

Post subject: Come to Yantai Beach

Suggest coming for a few days trip to Yantai (fly up in 1.5 hours). Clean sandy beaches, clear seas, excellent seafood, great wine (juice for the kids), low price hotels, cool weather and very few mosquitos ! There is quite a bit of useful information on www.yantai-life.com.
