when you open the account they are supposed to give you the option of having internet banking or not I think. WHen i opened with bank of china, there were a few things to sign - one to open the card/book account, one for telephone banking, and one for internet banking.

you can always try http://www.ccb.com/portal/en/home/index.html and head to the online banking part to see if you can log in: the service may be all in Chinese though... I heard the only local bank with the English internet banking service is ICBC.

I suggest you open an account in Bank of China. Most of there staff can speak English and even the security guard will help you in filling up some application forms. You can also choose for ATM, ATM with passbook or just passbook. They also have this online banking.

I have internet banking with Bank of china and there is no transfer facility. Also my wife has ICBC but we've yet to be able to transfer in or out of China using internet.

I dont really want to open a whole new bank account.. is there another way around this?

the reason i went to that bank is because we arrived here during the public holiday and went to the bank the first or second day after they opened and it was really busy and we found out we could get served quicker (by this we still had to wait ages) because we had guanxi ie relatives who were some kind of special members. well i suppose we did get served a little quicker but the stupid woman was so rude i wanted to punch her!!

I don't need to transfer in/out of china (although that would be handy..) but just to pay the rent and bills or to buy things online or something??

For those that are interested, we found out how.
It's actually the industrial and commercial bank that we were with, not construction (oops). Embarassed

It's pretty easy.

Go to this website

http://www.icbc.com.cn/e_index.jsp

click on 'personal banking'

then set it up using your card no. and password which you got/registered at the bank Smile

AFAIK, the only Mainland bank absent HSBC that has online banking in English is the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). Using ICBC's online banking function I have wired money overseas on several occasions, but you must have a USB key in order to do it.

Wow i can't believe i know something that you guys don't. Hahaha.... since i feel so green and stupid most of the time..

ANY-WHo, BOC does indeed have an english online banking site as I accidentally found out after much trouble recently. I haven't really looked into exactly 'what' or how advanced the services offered here are, (i just used it for 2 secs to confirm my balance)... but you can log in with your debit card number and online password (if you have registered for this service), at the following site...

Go to: http://www.sh.bank-of-china.com/en/

Click on: Online trading > Private user login

(don't ask.. I wasn't planning on doing any online trading either.) By this time the login page should've appeared. Voila! Hope that helps... some people.

The BOC service is extremely limited. You can only transfer between your own accounts and not to those of third parties. You can, however, pay your cellular and house phone bill along with a few other utilities.

All in all, it is not nearly as robust as ICBC's.
