| Post subject: Grossed out at Japanese restaurant |
As I was waiting for my takeout at a Japanese restaurant last night, I saw the sushi chef dip his knife into a fish tank with somewhat cloudy water and live eels right before he started cutting the sushi rolls.
Thank goodness I didn't order any sushi rolls from there, but please tell me that none of you have ever witnessed this before in Shanghai... |

I took an unhappy peek into the kitchen of a sushi place here...unintentional, the curtain wafted as I passed by. The glance confirmed my opinion not to try the sushi there. |

I think dipping a "knife into a fish tank with somewhat cloudy water and live eels" is among the less disgusting things happening in many shanghai (and international) kitchens. much more disgusting IMO is that the guy probably didn't wash his hands the whole day, etc. |

Unfortunately, a LOT worse happens in kitchens around the world.
Nonetheless, names of places would be a good start. maybe start a "Restaurants to Avoid" thread with the requirement of listing "Why" and "When the observations were made" That way people can properly judge if a particular offense warrants a boycott. |

My rule of thumb regarding restaurants is: Don't look into the kitchen; Don't ask what the food is cooked out of; Don't go into restaurants that are not full. |

Too true, yu888, but, as with jacko8, I usually try to avoid looking into the kitchen. As a general rule I believe that, much of the time, what the eye doesn't see, the stomach won't reject.
As I said, I wasn't eating there, just passing, & happened to glance over at the wrong time. It was the Sushi place in the middle of the 1st floor of the Gubei Carrefour centre & one of the "chefs" in the kitchen was indulging in some in depth nasal excavation. Yes, yes, this no doubt happens at places here where I have eaten & will eat, but if I don't see it, I won't feel disgusted. .. & when the food is served raw...sorry, but a couple of people did ask. |

Yeah
I was at the same Japanese restaurant last month and went to the gents. In there was a chef who ignored the hand washing facilities. Saw him later preparing food in the same sushi restaurant. However, I did survive |

ALLOWED?
I sincerely hope you are not concerned that we will suffer at the hands of the cruel and tyrannical regime that ultimately holds us in its clutches simply by providing a service to each other.

You will be an accomplish to foul, evil doing deeds of such that I will get my bros in the Shanghai Ax Gang onto you!

The restaurant is called 满腹满足 (man fu man zhu) on dagu road, across the street from zhong kai apartments. |

Allowed? So long as your observation was legitiomate and your intentions are not to bash a particular place but to notify the public of something like this, of course it is allowed. Discussions like this need to tkae place. it is only if there is some sort of intent to libel a particlar place that we need to address it. As you may have read, even our own advertisers are open game, though admittedly in those cases, the restaurants tend to respond to the issues more as they are also on the site reading about the criticisms. |

Dipping the knife into the tank definitely made it more filthy. I hope he wasn't trying to make the sushi taste more "fresh" by doing so :p |
